Brisbane in December: what to expect

December is Brisbane's first full summer month: warm, humid and thundery. Days usually sit near 29 °C and nights near 21 °C, with the humidity making both feel heavier than the numbers suggest. Sea temperatures in the bay are warm enough for long swims.

Rain arrives mostly as short, heavy afternoon or evening storms rather than all-day drizzle, so a wet morning rarely ruins the day. That said, December can bring heatwaves and severe storm cells, and the wider Queensland coast is in cyclone season from November to April.

The Queensland summer school holidays fall across December and January, so the second half of the month is busy for the city and the nearby coasts. Hotel rates in the centre and at South Bank climb accordingly, and the best-value rooms go first.

Book accommodation and any domestic flights several weeks ahead if you are travelling after about 15 December. Early December is usually calmer and cheaper, and the weather is much the same. New Year's Eve adds a second spike: venues and riverside spots fill up, and some are ticketed.

Brisbane's December calendar is built around Christmas and the run into New Year, plus the start of the cricket and tennis seasons. Confirm dates and ticketing locally before you build a trip around any single event.

Stay central and use the river: the CityCat ferries connect the centre, South Bank and the inner suburbs, and are a practical way to sightsee without a car. South Bank's man-made beach and parklands are the obvious hot-day move, with the Queensland Art Gallery and Museum nearby if a storm rolls in.

For a full day out, head to the bayside suburbs and islands of Moreton Bay, or north to the Sunshine Coast and south to the Gold Coast — both are day-trip distance by car or train. Inland, the Scenic Rim and Lamington National Park offer cooler rainforest walks, though summer storms can close tracks.

Pack for heat and humidity first: light, loose clothing, a hat, sunglasses and high-factor sunscreen. Add a compact rain shell or umbrella for afternoon storms, and quick-dry footwear if you plan on rainforest or coastal walks.

Bring insect repellent for evenings and any wetland or bushwalk, plus a refillable water bottle. If you are heading north into the tropics, note that stinger season runs November to May and some beaches require swimming inside netted enclosures.

November is the better-value version of December: warm and humid with building storm activity, but before the school holidays and the price spike. October is drier and one of the most comfortable months of the year in Brisbane.

January is hotter and wetter and still in the school holidays, so crowds and prices stay high. February eases slightly as schools return, though it remains a wet, humid month.
