Day trip from Brisbane to Gold Coast: how to get there and what to do

The Gold Coast is a strip of beach and high-rise about 70–80 km south of central Brisbane, and it is one of the easiest day trips in Australia: a suburban train line runs most of the way, so you do not need a car. If your Brisbane plan has a spare day and you want sand, surf or a theme park, go.

The trade-off is time. A train plus tram or bus takes about 90 minutes each way, so a day trip gives you roughly six to eight usable hours on the coast. That is enough for one beach suburb, one surf lesson or one theme park. It is not enough for two parks, or for a park plus a proper beach afternoon.

Skip the day trip if you are in Brisbane for only two nights, if you are travelling with small children who need naps, or if the forecast is heavy rain. In those cases either stay a night on the coast or use the day for Brisbane itself.

Train is the default. Queensland Rail's Gold Coast line leaves from Brisbane Central and Roma Street and runs south through Beenleigh and Coomera to Helensvale and Nerang, roughly every 15–30 minutes in the day. From Helensvale, the G:link tram continues to Surfers Paradise and Broadbeach; from Nerang, local buses run to the beach. Total door-to-door from central Brisbane is about 90 minutes.

Fares are distance-based and paid with a go card or a contactless bank card; a one-way trip to the coast is roughly A$10–15, 2026 estimate. Tap on and off at the readers on the platform.

Driving is faster outside peak hours: about 60–80 minutes from central Brisbane to Surfers Paradise via the M1, but the motorway jams on Friday afternoons, Sunday evenings and school-holiday weekends. Parking near the beach is paid and can be full by mid-morning.

Organised day tours and theme-park transfer buses pick up from Brisbane hotels and are the simplest option if you are going to a park; they cost more than the train but remove the planning. Rideshare and taxi are the most expensive option and rarely worth it for a day trip.

Take an early train from Brisbane Central, around 7:30–8:30am, to be on the coast before 10am. If you are doing a theme park, go straight there and plan to leave by late afternoon; the parks are a full day on their own.

If you are doing the beach instead, ride the tram to Surfers Paradise or Broadbeach, walk the foreshore, swim between the red and yellow flags where lifeguards patrol, and book a surf lesson for the morning while the wind is lighter. Lunch at Broadbeach or Burleigh Heads, then a late-afternoon walk on the headland before the train back.

Aim to leave the coast by about 6–7pm so you are back in Brisbane for dinner. If you are driving, leave earlier on a Sunday to avoid the M1 queue.

A bare-bones day trip is cheap: return train fare plus food, roughly A$40–60 per person, 2026 estimate. A theme park day is the expensive version, because park tickets are the main cost and they are priced per park per day.

Bring your own water and snacks; beach-side cafés and convenience stores are convenient but add up over a full day. If you are driving, budget for paid parking near the beach and for fuel.

Stay if you want two theme parks, a full beach day without a train deadline, or a night out in Surfers Paradise or Broadbeach. Accommodation ranges from hostels to high-rise apartments and hotels, and staying one night turns a rushed day into a relaxed one.

Return to Brisbane if you only want one beach afternoon or one park, or if you already have Brisbane plans for the evening. The train runs late enough that a day trip does not need to end early.

If you do stay, book ahead for school-holiday periods and major events, when the coast fills up and prices rise.

The Gold Coast runs roughly north–south along the coast, with the train line inland and the tram linking Helensvale to the beach strip. Surfers Paradise and Broadbeach sit in the middle; Burleigh Heads and Coolangatta are further south and need a bus or car from the train.
