The detail
Gold Coast: the train from Brisbane Central to Helensvale or Nerang takes about an hour, and buses or the tram continue to Surfers Paradise and the beaches. This is the easiest car-free day: swim, walk the foreshore, and be back for dinner. Summer weekends are crowded and the surf can be rough; patrol flags matter.
Sunshine Coast: trains run to Landsborough, where buses connect to Caloundra, Mooloolaba and Maroochydore. It is a longer day than the Gold Coast and rewards an early start. Australia Zoo, near Beerwah, is on the same line and is a full day on its own.
Moreton Island: ferries leave from Holt Street in the city, and day tours include the crossing, snorkelling at the wrecks and sandboarding. Tangalooma is the usual base. Book ahead; this is not a turn-up-and-go trip.
K'gari (Fraser Island): a 4WD sand island about 3.5 hours north, reached via Hervey Bay or Rainbow Beach. Day tours run long, often 12–14 hours door to door, and include the ferry, a 4WD bus and a guide. If you have two days, staying overnight is far better than the day trip.
Scenic Rim: Lamington National Park and Springbrook are the rainforest and waterfall day trips, roughly 1.5–2 hours west by car. Walks range from short boardwalks to full-day hikes. Springbrook's lookouts and the Natural Bridge are the standard stops.
Redland City and North Stradbroke Island: train or drive to Cleveland, then the ferry to Dunwich. Buses meet the ferry for Point Lookout. It is a quieter beach day than the Gold Coast and works without a car if you time the ferries.
Ipswich and the Brisbane Valley: the shortest trip on this list, useful on a half day. Trains run from Central in about 50 minutes; the rail museum and the old town centre are the draw.
