Where to stay in Brisbane: best neighborhoods and hotels

For a first trip, base yourself in the Brisbane CBD or South Bank. Both put you within walking distance of the river, the Queensland Museum and Gallery of Modern Art, the botanic gardens and the CityCat ferry terminals, and both have the widest choice of hotels. You pay for that convenience, but you save on taxis and time.

If your trip is about bars and live music, Fortitude Valley is the better fit and usually a little cheaper. If you want space, quiet and a kitchen, look at West End, Kangaroo Point or Newstead. Stay near the airport only if you have an early flight or a single overnight stop.

The CBD runs along a bend of the Brisbane River, so most central hotels are within a 10–15 minute walk of the water, Central or Roma Street stations, and the Queen Street Mall. Rooms with a river view cost more and are worth it if you plan to spend evenings on the balcony; otherwise save the money for meals. Note that some CBD streets are steep, and construction work has been continuous in recent years.

South Bank sits directly across the river, linked to the CBD by the Victoria Bridge and the Goodwill Bridge, both walkable. It has the man-made beach, parkland, museums and the main cultural precinct, which makes it the easiest base with children. It is also the most expensive area for the same standard of room.

Fortitude Valley is the nightlife district: bars, clubs and live venues along Brunswick Street and around the James Street end, which is more boutiques and restaurants than clubs. It is one train stop or a 20-minute walk from the CBD. Expect noise on Friday and Saturday nights, so ask for a room away from the street.

West End and Highgate Hill are residential, with cafés, cheap eats and a slower pace. Hotels are few, so most visitors here book apartments or rooms in guesthouses. Kangaroo Point gives you river views and a short walk over the Story Bridge or a ferry hop into the centre, but the streets climb and evening dining is limited.

Newstead, Teneriffe and Bulimba suit travellers with a car or a longer stay: converted warehouses, apartment hotels, supermarkets and easy parking. The CityCat ferry makes the trip into the centre pleasant rather than quick. For a one-night layover, the airport precinct has the usual chains and a free or cheap shuttle, but there is nothing to walk to.

Prices below are 2026 estimates for a standard double room in the shoulder season, booked a few weeks ahead. School holidays, Riverfire and major stadium events push rates up sharply, and the same room can double.

Hostels cluster around the CBD and Fortitude Valley, with dorm beds typically A$45–80 and private rooms A$110–180. Apartment hotels with a kitchen start around A$180 and rise with size and view. Serviced apartments in Newstead or Teneriffe often work out cheaper per night than a CBD hotel for stays of four nights or more.
