Brazil in October: what to expect

October is a medium month on both counts. It is not a Brazilian school holiday and not yet the summer peak, so Rio's beaches, Iguaçu and the Northeast resorts are busy but manageable. Domestic travel picks up around the 12 October holiday weekend, when Brazilians take a long break and coastal pousadas fill for a few days.

Prices follow the same pattern: medium. Long-haul flights from the US and Europe are usually cheaper than in December and January, and hotel rates in Rio and Salvador are lower than at New Year. Book Rio, Iguaçu and any Pantanal lodge two to three weeks ahead; the 12 October weekend needs earlier booking.

October is a quieter events month than Carnival or June, but two fixed dates matter for planning. 12 October is Nossa Senhora Aparecida, Brazil's national patron saint holiday, and it is also celebrated as Children's Day — a long weekend when beaches, resorts and domestic flights fill up.

Elsewhere the calendar is mostly religious and local: church festivals and processions around 12 October in many towns, spring cultural seasons in São Paulo and Rio, and the run-up to the São Paulo Formula 1 Grand Prix, which usually falls in early November rather than October. Confirm exact dates locally each year.

Rio de Janeiro is the easy first choice: warm days, dry-ish weather and the classic sights without summer crowds. Add Iguaçu Falls for two nights while the falls are running well, or fly north to Salvador and the Bahia coast.

The Northeast is at its best: Salvador for the old city, Recife and Olinda for colonial streets and music, Porto de Galinhas and Maceió for reefs and warm water. Fortaleza and Jericoacoara suit wind and dunes. São Paulo works as a city stop, cooler and rainier but full of food and museums.

Skip or postpone the Amazon if you want flooded-forest canoeing — October's low water closes some routes. The Pantanal can still be excellent for jaguars and wildlife, but check fire and smoke reports first. The Lençóis Maranhenses lagoons are dry by October, so go for the dunes and wind, not swimming.

Pack for warm days and cooler evenings in the Southeast, plus rain protection for late October. Light cotton clothes, a hat, high-factor sunscreen and insect repellent cover most of the trip. A light jacket helps in São Paulo and the South, and on air-conditioned buses and planes.

For the Northeast, swimwear, reef-safe sunscreen and sandals are the essentials. For the Amazon or Pantanal, add long sleeves and trousers for mosquitoes, a rain shell and quick-dry clothing. Bring a reusable water bottle and a plug adapter (Brazil uses type N, 127 V or 220 V depending on the region).

September is similar but slightly drier in the Southeast and still smoky in the Pantanal and Amazon. November warms up, brings the São Paulo Formula 1 Grand Prix and the 20 November national holiday, and prices start to climb towards summer.

December is the peak: summer rains begin, New Year's Eve on Copacabana fills Rio, and everything needs booking early. If you want the Northeast coast at its best with lower prices, October or November is the better window.
