Brazil in December: what to expect

December is high summer across Brazil. The Southeast coast — Rio de Janeiro, Paraty, Ilhabela, São Paulo — turns hot, humid and stormy, with downpours that usually hit in the late afternoon and can flood streets for an hour or two. Mornings are often clear enough for the beach or Sugarloaf before the cloud builds.

The Northeast coast is the reliable side of the country this month: Salvador, Recife, Olinda, Maceió and Porto de Galinhas stay warm at roughly 26–30 °C with plenty of sun, since their rainy season runs April–July. The North coast and dunes (Fortaleza, Jericoacoara) are rated ok rather than best, and the Lençóis Maranhenses lagoons are still filling — the swimming season there is June–September.

The Amazon is wet again, hot and humid all day; expect rain most days and high river levels building toward the May–July peak. The Pantanal is in its wet season, which floods roads and scatters wildlife, so it is not a jaguar trip now. The South and Iguaçu are hot: the falls run full after summer rain, which is spectacular but means wet, slippery walkways.

The month splits in two. The first three weeks are busy but manageable — Brazilian school holidays have started, domestic beaches fill at weekends, and hotel rates in Rio and Florianópolis climb. From about 20 December the country moves into full holiday mode and stays there through New Year.

Réveillon, Brazil's New Year, is the peak. Rio's Copacabana fireworks draw millions onto the sand, and hotels along the seafront sell out months ahead at their highest rates of the year; Salvador, Florianópolis and the Northeast resort towns run their own parties and fill the same way. Flights into Rio, Salvador and Recife are at their most expensive and hardest to change.

If your dates are fixed around New Year, book accommodation and internal flights by October, and expect minimum-stay rules and prepayment at coastal hotels. If you can move, the first half of December gives you the same warm Northeast weather with softer prices and easier tables.

The headline event is Réveillon on 31 December: Copacabana's fireworks in Rio are the biggest, with white clothing the tradition, and Salvador, Florianópolis, Maceió and most coastal cities stage their own. Expect road closures, packed beaches and taxis at surge prices from early evening.

Christmas itself is a family holiday in Brazil, quieter on the streets than in the US or UK, with celebrations concentrated on Christmas Eve. Many restaurants close or run set menus; shops shut on 25 December. In the Northeast, December also brings the tail of the forró and festa season, and Salvador's religious calendar stays busy.

São Paulo keeps its cultural programme running through the holidays — museums, theatre and the city's Christmas lights on Avenida Paulista — and is a reasonable base if you want a city trip without beach crowds.

The Northeast is the safest bet: Salvador for music and the old town, Recife and Olinda for colonial streets and beaches, Maceió and Porto de Galinhas for reef swimming. This is the coast that stays dry while the Southeast storms.

Rio de Janeiro is worth it if you accept the rain and want the New Year party — plan beach and viewpoint mornings, indoor afternoons. São Paulo suits museum and food days, with rain likely most afternoons. In the South, Florianópolis is a summer beach destination that fills fast; Iguaçu Falls are at their most powerful but you will get wet.

For the Amazon, Manaus and river lodges are open and green, with rain most days and rising water — a good trip if you want the flooded-forest experience rather than dry-season beaches. Skip the Pantanal as a wildlife trip this month.

Think hot, humid and wet. Lightweight cotton or technical fabrics, sandals plus one pair of closed shoes, a compact rain shell, and a dry bag for phone and camera on beach and boat days. Reef-safe sunscreen and insect repellent matter in the Northeast and the Amazon.

For Réveillon, white clothing is the tradition — pack something white for 31 December. Bring a small padlock for hostel lockers, a reusable water bottle, and a power bank for long beach days. If you are heading to the Amazon, add long sleeves and trousers for evenings and a head net.

November is the shoulder: summer building, the São Paulo Formula 1 Grand Prix in some years, and a national holiday on 20 November, with lower prices than December. January is peak summer holidays — hot, humid and stormy in Rio, with beaches and flights still full and the Northeast dry and sunny.

If you want dry sightseeing in Rio, Iguaçu or the Pantanal, look at April–June or August–October instead. If the Northeast is your goal, December works and so does almost any month from September to March.
