Brandenburg is the state wrapped around Berlin: Potsdam's palaces 25 minutes from the centre, the Spreewald's canal villages, the lakes of the Lusatian Lake District, and quiet medieval towns on the Oder. The rail network points at Berlin, so most of it works as day-trips from the capital; the far east and south reward a car and a night or two.
