Boryeong is a west-coast city of about 100,000 people, known for Daecheon Beach and the July Mud Festival, plus Muchangpo's low-tide sea path and small islands reached by ferry from Daecheon Port. Sights are spread across the county and buses are thin, so a car changes the trip. Most travellers come for the festival, one beach night, or as a stop between Seoul and the southwest.

Getting around

Local buses link Daecheon station, the bus terminal and Daecheon Beach, but run infrequently and stop early; taxis are the practical fallback. Muchangpo, Wonsando ferry pier, Seongjusa and the Coal Museum are spread out and much easier by car. Ferries to Wonsando leave from Daecheon Port, about 30 min crossing.

Watch out

Safety

Very safe by big-city standards. The real risks are summer heat and rip currents at Daecheon, fast west-coast tides, and festival-week price gouging: agree the room rate first.
  • Mud Festival dates change each year and accommodation at Daecheon Beach sells out weeks ahead: book before you commit to July.
  • The Muchangpo sea path opens only around the first and full lunar moons, two to three times a month, for a few hours: check tide times or you will see only water.
  • Beach motels quote walk-in rates that jump during the festival; confirm the total before you hand over a card.
  • West-coast tides are large and fast; do not walk out on flats without checking the tide table.
