The Bernese Highlands (Berner Oberland) is the southern end of the canton of Bern: the Jungfrau and Eiger peaks, two lakes at Interlaken, and twin valleys running to Grindelwald and Lauterbrunnen. Bases sit 20–60 minutes apart by train, so pick one for 3–4 nights and day-trip the rest. Trains reach every village; a hire car is dead weight.
