A first visit fits inside a walkable core on the south bank of the Sava/Danube ridge: Kalemegdan and the fortress at the north tip, Knez Mihailova running south to Republic Square, Skadarlija just east of it, and Vračar (the Temple of Saint Sava) a tram or short car ride further south. Zemun, across the water, and New Belgrade's tower blocks are a different city rhythm entirely.
