Belgrade has no food district. Eating here means picking a category and driving a few minutes: a diner breakfast, a summer seafood shack, a pizza or sub shop, or a supermarket deli if you are heading to the lake. Belgrade sits in the Belgrade Lakes region of central Maine, and the food follows the state: seafood from the coast, diner cooking, and the fried and grilled staples of a lake town. Maine's signature dishes are the ones to order: a lobster roll (cold with mayo or warm with butter), fried clams, New England clam chowder, and a haddock or fried-fish plate. Breakfast is a genuine local institution — eggs, home fries, pancakes and bottomless coffee. If you only eat one meal out here, make it breakfast, then a seafood lunch in season.

Ask about the catch and the season. Fried clams and lobster are at their best in summer; winter menus lean on chowder, haddock and comfort food. Vegetarian options exist but are thinner than in a city — ask whether soups and beans use meat stock, as you would anywhere in the US.
