Best day trips from Belgrade: how to get there and what to see

Belgrade is a small lakeside town, not a city with a rail hub, so the practical question is whether you have a car. With one, three or four destinations are worth a full day. Without one, plan around Waterville and the lake you are already on.

Distances below are road distances from the Belgrade Lakes village centre and are approximate; check current conditions before a winter drive.

Waterville is the closest real town and the one most Belgrade visitors use for groceries, a pharmacy and a meal out. Downtown has a compact main street with cafés and a couple of good restaurants, and Colby College on the hill above town runs an art museum that is free to enter (check current hours).

This is a half-day rather than a full one. Pair it with a swim or a paddle back at the lake, or push on to Augusta if you want more. Parking downtown is on-street and usually easy outside the lunch hour.

Augusta, the state capital, is a straightforward drive south-east and works as a rainy-day trip: the Maine State Museum covers the state's natural and industrial history, and there is the usual run of large stores if you need supplies. Check opening days, as some state buildings and museums close at weekends and on public holidays (check).

Skowhegan, north of Belgrade, is smaller and quieter, with a river running through the middle and a walk along it. Its main draw is the summer fair, which fills the town for about a week in late summer; outside that week it is a low-key stop best combined with something else (check dates).

The drive north from Belgrade toward Jackman runs through woods and past small lakes, and it is the best full-day trip in the region if you want a sense of how empty central Maine is. Moose are the draw: dawn and dusk along the Moose River corridor are the usual times, and drivers are warned to watch for them on the road itself.

This is a long day. Fill the tank before you leave, carry water and food, and expect patchy phone signal once you are north of the last small town. In winter the route needs proper tyres and a check on conditions; in spring, watch for frost heaves and soft shoulders (check).

A coastal run to Camden or Belfast is possible as a long day trip, roughly two hours each way, and gives you a harbour, ocean air and seafood. It is a lot of driving for one day; many travellers instead make it an overnight and keep Belgrade for the lakes.

The cheapest and often best day out is the one you are already in: Great Pond and the connected Belgrade Lakes chain are good for swimming, kayaking and fishing, with public boat launches and a state park nearby (check fees and seasons). If you only have one free day, this is the low-effort option.

Almost all of the cost is fuel and food. Maine fuel prices move with the national average, so budget on the higher side if you are driving a large vehicle. State park day-use fees are modest and are charged per vehicle; annual passes exist and pay off if you plan several park visits (2026 estimate, check).

Tolls apply on the Maine Turnpike, which you would use for the coastal run but not for Waterville or Jackman. Rental cars and rideshares are limited in the Belgrade area, so a taxi or a lift from a local is often the only car-free option (check).
