Jackman is a village of about 860 people at the headwaters of the Kennebec River, on US 201 in western Maine, and the last US town before the Quebec border. It is not a place you tour; it is a base for water, trails and wildlife. Two nights covers a moose drive at dawn, one river or trail day and the drive in and out. One night only works if you are crossing to or from Canada.

Getting around

You need a car. Two paved roads (US 201 and ME 15) meet in town; everything else is logging road, snowmobile trail or water. No buses, no passenger train. Fuel and supplies in town — fill up before heading north to the border.

Watch out

Safety

Low crime, high exposure: the real risks are moose on the road at dawn and dusk, cold water, thin ice and no cell signal. Tell someone your route before you go into the woods.
  • Moose on the road at dawn and dusk: slow down, especially on US 201 north of town. A moose strike usually injures the driver.
  • Cell coverage is patchy outside town; download maps before you drive.
  • Winter storms close roads and trails without much warning; carry a blanket, food and a full tank.
  • Ice on the lakes is not safe on a fixed date — ask locally before walking or riding on it.
  • Border crossing to Quebec: bring your passport and check current entry rules before you drive north.
