Best things to do in Belgrade, including free and rainy-day options

Belgrade is a small town in central Maine built around the Belgrade Lakes chain — Great Pond, Long Pond, Messalonskee and others. There is no museum district or old-town quarter to walk. The reason to come is the water: swimming, kayaking, fishing, and slow evenings on a dock.

Plan one full lake day, half a day in the village and at the public access points, and keep a wet-weather backup in Waterville, about 20–25 minutes away by car. If you are not here for the lakes, treat Belgrade as a lunch-and-look stop on the way to somewhere else.

Great Pond is the anchor. It is one of Maine's larger lakes, with several public access points and marinas around its shore, and it is where most visitors swim, launch a boat or rent a kayak. Long Pond is quieter and popular with anglers. Water temperatures are swimmable from roughly late June into early September; outside that window, expect cold water even on a warm day.

The village centre is small: a few shops, places to eat and a general store for supplies. It is worth an hour, not a day. The real pleasure is the drive between the ponds — narrow roads, cottages, boat trailers and views across the water. In late September and early October the same drive becomes the foliage route.

For anything indoor — a proper museum, a cinema, a bigger supermarket — you drive to Waterville. It is the nearest service town and the practical wet-weather answer. Further north, Jackman is a different trip entirely: woods, moose and remote lakes, not a day out from Belgrade.

If you are building a longer Maine loop, Belgrade works as a two-night lake stop between the coast and the mountains rather than a destination in itself.

Most of what you do in Belgrade is free: swimming, walking, driving, watching the sunset from a public access point. Money goes on rentals, fuel and food.

Rental prices vary by operator and season, so treat the figures below as bands and confirm when you book. Lodging in July and August is the biggest cost and the thing to book first.

You need a car. There is no useful bus or train service around the Belgrade Lakes, and taxis are limited. Fill the tank in Waterville or Augusta before heading out on back roads.

Summer weekends are busy and parking at access points fills early. Weekdays in June and September are the quietest good-weather windows. Black flies and mosquitoes are a real factor in late spring and early summer — bring repellent.

Swim with care: lake bottoms drop off, there are no lifeguards at most access points, and boats share the water. Maine requires life jackets for children and for anyone on a personal watercraft.
