Best places to visit in Barbados: top cities, regions and sights

Barbados is small: roughly 34 km from north to south and 23 km across, so almost everything is a day trip from one base. The decision is not which places to see but where to sleep, because the south and west coasts give you different holidays. The table below ranks the main areas for a first visit.

Hastings, Worthing and St Lawrence Gap run along one stretch of south-coast road with beaches, guesthouses, supermarkets and frequent buses into Bridgetown. It is the easiest place to land as a first-timer: you can swim in the morning, eat cheaply, and reach Oistins or the capital without a car.

St Lawrence Gap is the nightlife strip of bars and restaurants. Oistins, a few kilometres east, is a fishing town best known for its Friday fish fry, when stalls grill fish and the crowd is at its biggest. Go early in the evening, expect queues, and take cash.

The west coast, from Holetown up to Speightstown, has the calmest swimming on the island and most of the resorts and upscale restaurants. Holetown marks the site of the first English landing and now holds shops, cafés and a small museum area; Speightstown is a quieter old port with a slower pace and a good base if you want to avoid crowds.

This coast is also where many catamaran and sunset cruises leave from, usually with hotel pickup. If swimming and dining matter more than nightlife, base here and day-trip south.

Bridgetown is the capital and a UNESCO World Heritage site, with the Careenage waterfront, the Parliament Buildings, Cheapside Market and the Garrison historic area including the Barbados Museum. Carlisle Bay, just south of the centre, has calm water, a line of beach bars and several shipwrecks that make it a simple snorkelling stop.

Most travellers see Bridgetown as a half-day or full-day trip rather than a base. Go on a weekday morning for the market and museum, then swim at Carlisle Bay in the afternoon. Cruise-ship days make the centre busier, so check the port schedule if you want it quiet.

Bathsheba, on the east coast, is the island's surf village: boulders in the water, strong Atlantic swell and a very different feel from the west. Swimming is not safe here for most people because of the currents, so treat it as a scenery and surf-watching stop. Andromeda Gardens is nearby, and Hunte's Gardens sits inland in St Joseph.

Inland, Harrison's Cave in St Thomas is the main underground sight, with tram tours through the caverns. St Nicholas Abbey in St Peter and Sunbury Plantation House in St Philip cover the plantation and rum side. These are best done as a single island tour or with a rental car, since public buses are slower to these stops.

Five to seven nights on one base is enough for a first visit: two or three beach days, one Bridgetown day, one island tour covering the east coast and a cave or garden, and one evening at Oistins. Ten nights lets you split the trip between the west and south coasts without packing twice in a week.

Two weeks adds a second island, such as Grenada, by short regional flight. Check schedules and baggage rules before booking, since inter-island flights are limited.

Distances are short but roads are slow, so allow more time than the map suggests. Buses are cheap and frequent on the main south and west routes; a rental car is more useful for the east coast and inland sights. Driving is on the left.
