Step by step
Start with the long legs. If your trip is short, book a domestic flight for Dhaka to Cox's Bazar, Chattogram, Sylhet, Jashore or Saidpur; it saves a day of road. Allow 90 minutes for the run to Dhaka airport, and expect fog delays on winter mornings.
For Dhaka–Chattogram and Dhaka–Sylhet, take the train: calmer and safer than the road. Book online at eticket.railway.gov.bd as early as you can, especially around holidays. Foreign travellers may need to buy at the station counter with a passport — check before you rely on the app.
If a train is full, use an AC bus from a known operator such as Green Line or Shohagh. Daytime is better than overnight. Road deaths are high in Bangladesh, so treat every bus journey as the riskiest part of the trip.
Inside Dhaka, use MRT Line 6 for north–south trips; it beats the traffic. For everything else, book a ride-hailing car or motorbike through Uber or Pathao for an upfront price. For short hops, flag a CNG auto-rickshaw or a cycle-rickshaw and agree the fare first; meters are ignored.
For the classic river journey, take an overnight launch from Sadarghat to Barisal. Choose a large launch with a cabin rather than deck class. The old 'Rocket' paddle steamers run irregularly — check before planning around them.

Friday is the main day off. Shops open after midday prayers and offices are closed; government offices run Sunday to Thursday. Plan travel and errands around that.
