Bahamas in March: what to expect

March sits at the end of the dry high season. On New Providence and Grand Bahama you get long sunny stretches, daytime highs near 28 °C and nights around 20 °C, with the sea at roughly 23–24 °C — comfortable for a long swim, bracing for anyone used to bath-warm water. Central and southern islands such as Exuma run a touch warmer and drier.

Cool fronts still push down from the US in March, and when one arrives you get two or three windy days with cloud and a drop of several degrees. They rarely last. Rain is light compared with summer: expect the odd short shower rather than all-day rain, and afternoon thunderstorms are not yet a routine feature.

Wind matters more than temperature for boat trips. A front can cancel or shorten a day out to the Exuma cays or a snorkel site, so build one flexible day into any Out Island plan.

March is high season, and the last two weeks often overlap US college spring break. Nassau and Paradise Island absorb most of it: Cable Beach and the resorts get busy, day-trip boats fill, and restaurant tables at prime time need booking. Prices for hotels and flights sit at their winter peak, and inter-island seats to Exuma or Eleuthera sell out around the break weeks.

The Out Islands are the escape hatch. Exuma, Eleuthera and Abaco see far fewer people than Nassau in March, though their smaller hotels and limited flights mean you should still book months ahead. Late March is usually calmer than the first half, once the break wave passes.

If value matters more than perfect weather, May is the cheaper shoulder month; if you want the driest, quietest version of winter, January and February trade a little warmth for fewer party crowds.

The fixed public holidays in March are none — the movable ones are. If Easter falls in late March, Good Friday and Easter Monday bring closures: banks, government offices and some shops shut, and ferries and tour operators may run reduced schedules. Check the year's Easter dates before you plan a transfer on those days.

The other March fixture is informal: US spring break. Nassau's bars, beach clubs and Paradise Island resorts run busy programming through the month, which is fun if you want it and easy to avoid if you do not. Junkanoo parades are a December–January event, so March visitors see the costumes in museums rather than on the street.

Village and regatta dates on the Family Islands shift year to year — confirm locally before travelling for one.

For a first trip, base yourself on New Providence: Nassau for food, history and the Fish Fry, and Paradise Island for the beaches and Atlantis. Three or four nights is enough, and the weather is at its most reliable for beach days and harbour boat trips.

Then fly out. Exuma gives you the clearest water in the country and the swimming pigs at Big Major Cay, with March conditions good for boat days. Grand Bahama and Freeport suit divers and anyone wanting a slower, cheaper base with easy reef access. Eleuthera and Abaco reward those with more time and a car.

Keep one weather-flex day. If a front shuts down the water, swap in the Nassau museums, the Queen's Staircase, or a drive along the island instead of a boat.

Pack for summer with one warm layer. Days are beach weather: swimwear, quick-dry shirts, shorts, sandals, a hat and high-factor sunscreen. Add a light jacket or hoodie for breezy evenings and air-conditioned ferries, and a rain shell for the odd shower.

Reef-safe sunscreen is worth bringing; it costs more locally. Bring a dry bag for boat days, motion-sickness tablets if you are prone, and cash in small notes for taxis, the Fish Fry and Family Island stalls. US dollars are accepted alongside the Bahamian dollar at par.

February is slightly cooler and just as dry, with high-season prices and fewer spring-break crowds. April keeps the warm, calm weather and adds the Family Island Regatta in Exuma, though you should confirm the dates each year. May is the value pick: warm sea, medium crowds and lower rates, with rain arriving late in the month.
