Bahamas in April: what to expect

April sits at the end of the dry high season. On New Providence and Grand Bahama you can expect warm, mostly sunny days with a daytime high near 28 °C and nights around 21 °C. The northern islands still get the occasional cool front early in the month, but they are weaker than in January or February.

Rain is limited. April is one of the drier months across the archipelago, though short afternoon showers are possible, especially later in the month. The sea is calm and around 25–26 °C — warm enough for long swims without a wetsuit. Central and southern islands such as Exuma run slightly warmer and drier than Nassau.

Hurricane season does not start until June, so storm risk in April is low. Windy days can still cancel small-boat crossings to the Out Islands; build a buffer day into any inter-island hop.

April is still high season. Spring break traffic tails off through the month, but Easter week brings a second wave of families, and hotel rates stay at peak levels until late April. Nassau and Paradise Island are the busiest; the Out Islands feel quieter but have fewer rooms, so they sell out first.

Book flights and accommodation two to three months ahead for Easter and for the Family Island Regatta. If you are flexible, the last week of April and the first days of May are the value window: the weather is nearly identical and prices start to drop.

The headline event is the Family Island Regatta in Exuma, a traditional Bahamian sailing competition with workboats racing in Elizabeth Harbour. Dates move each year, so confirm before booking. Easter is a public holiday period with Good Friday and Easter Monday closures; some shops and restaurants shut, and ferries run reduced schedules.

Junkanoo parades are a December and January fixture, so April visitors will not see the main processions. Smaller cultural events and church activities do take place around Easter.

For a first trip, base yourself on New Providence for three or four nights: Nassau for food, markets and history, and Paradise Island for the beaches and Atlantis. Then fly to one Out Island for four or five nights. Exuma is the obvious April pick because of the regatta and the swimming pigs, but Eleuthera and Abaco are quieter alternatives.

Grand Bahama and Freeport suit travellers who want easy access from the US East Coast and a slower pace. If you only have a week, do not try to combine three islands — you will spend it in airports and ferry terminals.

Pack for warm days and mild nights: light clothing, swimwear, a hat, sunglasses and reef-safe sunscreen. Bring a light rain jacket or compact umbrella for short showers, and a long-sleeve layer for breezy boat rides and air-conditioned interiors. Comfortable sandals and one pair of closed shoes cover most situations.

If you plan to snorkel or dive, bring your own mask or check rental quality before you go. A reusable water bottle is useful; tap water on the islands is generally treated but many travellers prefer bottled or filtered water.

March is similar to April — warm, dry and busy, with spring break crowds in Nassau. May is the value month: the sea stays warm, rains only start late in the month, and prices and crowds drop. February is drier and cooler, with the sea around 23 °C, which some travellers find chilly for swimming.
