Austria in March: what to expect

March is a transition month: winter still holds the high Alps while the valleys and cities start to warm. Expect grey, damp days in Salzburg and the Salzkammergut, where rain falls in any month, and brighter, drier conditions in the Tyrol valleys, helped by the foehn wind that can push a sudden mild day through.

Snow is the reason to come early in the month. Above roughly 1,500–1,800 m the cover usually holds into April, so spring skiing works best in the first three weeks. Lower runs turn heavy and slushy after lunch, and valley floors can be bare while the slopes above are white.

The last Sunday of March brings the clock change to summer time, so evenings stay light an hour longer — useful for city sightseeing, less so for early ski starts.

March sits between the February school-holiday peak and the Easter rush, so it is one of the better-value months for cities. Vienna hotel rates are usually lower than in April–October, and museum queues are short. Ski resorts stay busy at weekends and during any regional holiday week, and beds in the big Tyrol and Salzburgerland villages are still priced at winter rates.

If Easter falls in late March, expect a sharp spike: the Easter weekend is the last big ski weekend of the season and trains and mountain roads fill. In 2027 Easter Monday is 29 March, so the final days of that March behave like a peak week.

Book city hotels a few weeks ahead and ski accommodation earlier if your dates touch a holiday weekend.

March is a normal working month in Austria — no national public holiday falls in it except when Easter lands in late March. The cultural season in Vienna is still in full swing, with concerts and exhibitions running through to Easter, and ski resorts hold their end-of-season events and races as the snow softens.

Easter markets open in the days before Easter Sunday in Vienna and other cities, smaller than the Christmas markets but with the same food stalls and decorated eggs. Shops close on Easter Monday.

Split the month by altitude. For snow, head to the Tyrol and Salzburgerland resorts — Mayrhofen, Schladming, St. Christoph and the Kitzbühel area — where spring conditions mean sunny mornings and soft afternoons. Innsbruck makes a good base: you can ski in the morning and walk a city centre in the afternoon.

For cities, March is a comfortable, low-pressure month. Vienna's museums, palaces and concert halls need no warm weather, and hotel prices are below their spring peak. Graz and Linz work the same way. Salzburg is fine for sightseeing but is one of the wettest cities in the country, so pack a rain jacket.

Skip the lakes and the high hiking routes. Hallstatt and the Salzkammergut are quiet and often grey, boats run a reduced timetable, and Alpine huts stay closed until late June. The Wachau is dormant until the apricot blossom in April.

Layers, not one heavy coat. A typical March day in a valley can start near freezing and reach 15 °C by mid-afternoon, and ski slopes are 10–15 °C colder than the town below. Bring a waterproof shell, a warm mid-layer, gloves and a hat for the mountains, and comfortable shoes for wet city pavements.

For skiing, rent equipment locally rather than carrying it; late-season snow is hard in the morning and slushy after lunch, so goggles and sunscreen both earn their place. Add a small umbrella or hood for Salzburg and the lakes.

February is the peak ski month, with European school holidays pushing crowds and prices to their highest. April is between seasons: lifts close after Easter and huts stay shut, but Vienna and the Wachau are pleasant and cheap. May brings warmer cities while many mountain lifts and huts remain closed until June.

If your priority is hiking, lakes or a mix of mountains and cities, aim for June or September instead.
