Austria in April: what to expect

April is Austria's in-between month. The continental east — Vienna, the Wachau, Burgenland, Graz — warms first, with mild afternoons and cold mornings. Salzburg and the Salzkammergut lakes sit under a wetter regime, so a rain jacket earns its place in any month. In the Tyrol valleys the foehn wind can push a sudden warm day through, then snow returns within 48 hours.

Above roughly 1,500 m expect winter to still be in charge: fresh snow, icy paths and closed high passes. Valley walks and city streets are usually fine, but a mountain day in April needs a plan B. Daylight stretches quickly through the month, which makes late-afternoon sightseeing easy.

April is low season almost everywhere. City hotels in Vienna, Graz and Linz are cheaper than in May, and you can often decide a day ahead. The exceptions are Easter weekend, when Austrians travel and trains and city hotels fill, and the final ski week in resorts that stay open to the end of the school holidays.

Once the lifts close, ski towns go quiet: some hotels and restaurants shut for a few weeks between winter and summer. That means fewer services but also the year's lowest room rates in places like Schladming or Mayrhofen. Salzburg and Hallstatt are calm before the summer coaches arrive.

Easter is the anchor of the month and its date moves, so check the calendar before booking. Easter markets run in Vienna and other cities in the days before Easter Sunday, and Easter Monday is a public holiday with shops closed. It is also the last big ski weekend of the season.

Beyond Easter, April is a month of local spring events rather than fixed national ones: blossom walks in the Wachau and around Vienna, the start of the wine year in the east, and city culture programmes that continue year-round. Confirm dates locally, as many are set only a few weeks ahead.

Put the cities first. Vienna works in any weather: museums, coffee houses, the Ring and day trips to Klosterneuburg, Mödling or Baden by train. The Wachau valley — Melk, Spitz, Dürnstein, Weißenkirchen — is at its best for walking and wine when the apricots and vines come into leaf, though river boats may not run a full schedule yet.

Graz and the Styrian hills suit a mild spring weekend, and Linz or St. Pölten make easy add-ons. Innsbruck is a good base for valley walks and a cable car up to snow, but check which lifts are running. Salzburg is wet but uncrowded, and Hallstatt is far quieter than in summer. Skip multi-day hut-to-hut hikes and high Alpine drives that depend on seasonal passes.

Pack for two seasons in one day: a waterproof shell, a warm mid-layer, long trousers and shoes with grip. Add a compact umbrella, sunglasses and sunscreen for the bright high-altitude light, and a hat and gloves if you plan to go above the tree line. City clothes are casual; a smart layer helps if you have concert or opera tickets.

March keeps winter going in the mountains with spring skiing and quiet cities, and February is peak ski season with high prices in the resorts. May brings warmer cities but many mountain lifts and huts are still closed until June, which is the best all-round month for combining cities and mountains. If your trip is city-only, April's low prices are hard to beat.
