Australia in May: what to expect

Australia in May runs on two calendars. The tropical north and the Red Centre are starting their dry season, with clear skies, low humidity and comfortable daytime heat. The south-east coast and Tasmania are sliding into winter: sunny but crisp days, cold mornings and early sunsets.

The south-west around Perth is in its mild, green shoulder between the hot summer and the wet winter. Rainfall in May is concentrated in the far south — Melbourne, Tasmania and the south-west corner — while the north and centre are almost rain-free.

May sits between the Easter holidays and the June–July school break, so most of the country is quiet. Domestic airfares, city hotels and campervans are easier to book and cheaper than in January, July or during school holidays. The trade-off is the far south: beach towns and wine regions are winding down, and some coastal operators run reduced hours.

The north is the exception to the low-season rule. Cairns, Darwin and Broome are entering their best weather, so reef boats, Kakadu tours and Broome accommodation start filling — book those two to three weeks ahead rather than months ahead.

May is a light month for national events, which is part of its appeal. The main fixtures are cultural and regional rather than mass-market, so they rarely disrupt a trip.

This is the month to point at the north and centre. Cairns and the Great Barrier Reef have calm seas and clear water before the winter trade winds pick up. Darwin and Kakadu are dry, with accessible roads and waterfalls still running from the wet season. The Red Centre is at its best: Uluru and Kings Canyon are walkable all day, though nights drop near freezing, so bring a warm layer.

In the south, Sydney and Canberra are pleasant for city days and day trips, and the south-west around Perth and Margaret River is green and mild. Melbourne and Tasmania are for museums, food and short walks rather than beaches. Skip the far south coast if you want to swim — sea temperatures fall through May.

Pack for two climates if you are combining the south-east with the north or centre. Layers work everywhere: a warm mid-layer and a light rain shell for the south, plus a fleece or down jacket for Red Centre nights, which can approach freezing. In the north you need sun protection, insect repellent and light long sleeves for the evening.

April is warmer in the south and still wet in the far north; June brings the best of the tropics plus Vivid in Sydney and the start of the ski season. If your trip is mostly beaches and cities, shift earlier; if it is the reef, the outback or the Top End, May is close to ideal.
