Weather in March
March is the handover month. The southern half of the country is still summer-warm but no longer punishing: Sydney and the NSW coast run roughly 18–26 °C with sea temperatures at their annual peak, Melbourne swings between mild and hot days, Adelaide is dry and pleasant, and Perth starts to cool from its February highs. Tasmania is at the end of its walking season and often clear.
The tropical north is a different country in March. Cairns, Darwin, the Kimberley and Kakadu are in the wet season: high humidity, afternoon downpours, some unsealed roads closed and box jellyfish in coastal water. The Red Centre is still hot, with Alice Springs and Uluru often above 35 °C and some walks restricted in the heat of the day.

Crowds and prices
Crowds drop sharply once the summer school holidays end in late January, and March sits in the quiet window before Easter. Beaches, coastal towns and national park campsites are noticeably easier than in December or January, and accommodation in Sydney and Melbourne is cheaper than peak.
Two things push prices back up. The Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix fills Melbourne in mid-March, and Easter — which falls in late March or early April depending on the year — starts the next holiday surge. Book Melbourne beds and any Easter-week driving trip well ahead.
Domestic flights are usually cheaper in the first half of March than in the second. If you are hiring a campervan or a car for the Great Ocean Road or Tasmania, book early: March is popular with Australians escaping the last of the heat.

Where to go in March
Build the trip around the south. Sydney in March gives warm water, long beach days and the harbour at its best; add the Blue Mountains or the Southern Highlands for cooler air. Melbourne and the Great Ocean Road are comfortable, with fewer crowds than summer. Tasmania is excellent for walking — Cradle Mountain, Freycinet and the south-east — though snow is possible in the highlands any month.
Perth and the south-west are dry and warm, a good month for Rottnest Island, Margaret River and the beaches. Canberra is mild and green, with the lake and the national institutions at their easiest.
Leave the tropical north for later. Cairns, the Whitsundays, Darwin and the Kimberley are wet, humid and sometimes cut off; reef trips run but visibility and sea conditions are poorer than in the dry season. The Red Centre is workable if you start early and rest at midday, but May to September is far better.
