Australia in April: what to expect

April is the middle of autumn in the south and the tail of the wet season in the north, so the country splits into two very different trips. Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth settle into mild, mostly dry days with cool nights; Tasmania is still walkable but noticeably colder and changeable. The tropical north — Cairns, Darwin, the Kimberley — is hot, humid and still getting monsoon rain, with cyclones possible early in the month. The Red Centre cools to comfortable days with cold nights.

Two things change the plan. Daylight saving ends in New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia, Tasmania and the ACT in early April, so afternoons get shorter in the south; the exact date moves with the calendar, so check it for your year. And the tropical north only begins to dry out in the last week or two: if the reef or Kakadu is the point of the trip, May is the safer call.

April sits in the middle of the scale: busier and pricier than May or June, quieter than January. The reason is Easter, which falls in late March or April depending on the year, plus the school holidays most states take around it. During that window the coast, Tasmania and the Great Ocean Road fill with Australian families, and flights into Sydney, Melbourne and Hobart cost noticeably more. Outside it, the same month feels like a shoulder season.

Because Easter moves, the busy fortnight moves with it — check the exact dates for your year before booking. If your dates are fixed by Easter, book beds and internal flights well ahead. If they are not, the second half of April — after the school holidays, before the May lull — is the sweet spot: settled southern weather, softer prices, and the north starting to clear.

The fixed points are Easter and Anzac Day on 25 April, a national public holiday with dawn services in every city and town; many shops open late or close for the morning. School holidays run for roughly two weeks around Easter, with exact dates set by each state — check before booking. Beyond that, April is a month of food, wine and comedy rather than one big festival.

The south is the easy answer. Sydney has warm water, mild days and fewer people than in summer; the Blue Mountains and the Hunter are at their best. Melbourne and Victoria give you autumn colour in the ranges, the Great Ocean Road without summer traffic, and the Yarra Valley in vintage. Tasmania is still in walking season, though the highlands can turn cold fast. Perth and the south-west are dry and pleasant, and the Margaret River vineyards are turning.

In the centre, Uluru and Alice Springs are comfortable by day but cold at night — bring a fleece. The tropical north is the one to think about: Cairns, Port Douglas and the Whitsundays are hot and humid with rain and the risk of stingers, and some reef trips are weather-dependent. It improves through the month, so late April is better than early. Darwin and Kakadu are still in the wet, with some roads and sites closed (check).

Pack for two climates if you are combining the south and the north, and for a real temperature drop after dark in the centre and Tasmania. Layers beat a heavy coat in the south, where a mild afternoon can end cold. In the tropics you want quick-dry clothing, a light rain shell and insect repellent; in the Red Centre, a warm mid-layer for cold nights.

March is warmer and wetter in the north, with fewer holiday crowds in the south. May is the better month for the tropics and the Red Centre, and one of the quietest and cheapest of the year in the south — the trade-off is shorter days and cooler evenings. June brings the dry season into full swing in Cairns, Darwin and Uluru, but the south turns properly cold.
