Athens in March: what to expect

March is Athens' transition month: winter rain gives way to spring sunshine, but the change is not finished. Days are often bright and pleasant for walking, with a jacket needed in the morning and evening and after sunset. Rain arrives in spells rather than all day, so a single wet morning rarely ruins a plan — museums and covered sites fill the gap.

The wind can make the Acropolis hill and the coastal tram stops feel colder than the thermometer suggests. Layers work better than one heavy coat. By the end of the month afternoons are reliably warm enough for a terrace coffee, and the first almond and citrus blossom shows up in the parks and on the slopes of Lykavittos.

March sits at the bottom of the Athens tourism calendar. The Acropolis, the Acropolis Museum and the National Archaeological Museum are busy at midday but rarely queued the way they are in June. You can usually walk into a taverna in Plaka or Koukaki without a reservation, and hotel rates are among the lowest of the year outside deep winter.

Two things push prices up briefly: the long weekend around Clean Monday, when Greeks travel, and the days around 25 March. Book those dates early if you want a specific hotel. Ferry timetables to the islands are still reduced and many island hotels are shut, so treat March as a city-and-mainland month rather than an island-hopping one.

Clean Monday (Kathara Deftera) marks the start of Lent and falls in February or March depending on the Orthodox Easter date — 15 March 2027, moving yearly. Offices close, families fly kites on the hills, and seafood tavernas serve Lenten dishes. In Athens the kite-flying is concentrated on Filopappou Hill and Lykavittos.

Independence Day and the Annunciation fall on 25 March, with military and school parades in central Athens and in every town. Expect road closures around Syntagma and the centre in the morning, and traditional fried cod with garlic sauce (bakaliaros skordalia) on menus. Carnival season (Apokries) ends just before Clean Monday, with the biggest parade in Patras rather than Athens.

This is prime weather for the classic Athens sights: the Acropolis and Parthenon, the Ancient Agora, Hadrian's Library and the Roman Agora are all walkable and far more comfortable than in July. The Acropolis Museum and the National Archaeological Museum are the obvious wet-day backups, and both are quiet enough in March to see properly.

Use the mild days for the things that are miserable in summer heat: the climb up Lykavittos, the walk through the National Garden, Filopappou Hill and the Pnyx, and a half-day trip to Cape Sounion for the Temple of Poseidon. The coastal tram to Piraeus and the southern suburbs is a cheap way to see the Saronic Gulf; the water will look inviting but is still cold for swimming.

If you want a short trip out of the city, Aegina is the closest island with a year-round ferry and a working town, and Nafplio on the Peloponnese makes a good overnight by bus or car. Both are better in March than the Cyclades, where ferries are thin and businesses closed.

Pack for two seasons in one day: a light waterproof shell, a warm mid-layer for evenings and hilltops, comfortable walking shoes for the marble and cobbles, and sunglasses. A small umbrella earns its place more in March than in any other month of the Athens year. If you plan to visit churches or monasteries, cover shoulders and knees.

March is the cheapest and quietest of the spring months, but April brings wildflowers, longer days and the start of the island season, and May is the sweet spot for sightseeing and early swimming. February is colder and wetter but still workable for a city break, and January is the quietest month of all. If your dates are flexible, compare March with April and May before booking.
