Athens and Attica
Sleep in Athens for two or three nights; do Cape Sounion or a nearby island as a day trip, and keep the Athens bed for the ferries.
Rules in force · 3
- Greece ↗Greece is in the EU and the Schengen area: check entry rules, the EU Entry/Exit System and any travel authorisation requirement for your passport on official sources.
- Greece ↗Taking stones, pottery or other objects from archaeological sites is illegal; so is exporting antiquities without a permit.
- Greece ↗Do not photograph military sites or border zones; signs mark them.
Attica is one base and a few short excursions. The Acropolis and the museum fill a first morning; the coast, the temple at Cape Sounion and the ferry port at Piraeus are separate half-days. Moving hotels every night wastes mornings, so keep the Athens bed and take a day pack.
Where to sleep
Plaka for first-timers, Koukaki for quieter nights.
Temple of Poseidon; about 90 minutes each way.
Ferry port for the islands; about 30 minutes from the centre.
Night sequences
- 3 nights
- Athens 3, Cape Sounion at sunset
- 5 nights
- Athens 3, then two nights on an island by ferry
- Do not plan a hilltop walk in the middle of a summer day.
