Athens in April: what to expect

April is Athens' transition month: winter rain tapers off, the meltemi has not started, and afternoons are warm enough for a light jacket rather than a coat. Expect roughly 19–20 °C at the warmest part of the day and 11–12 °C at night, with the odd day pushing past 24 °C and the odd wet, windy one back near 14 °C. Rain usually arrives as a short shower rather than an all-day soak.

Daylight grows fast: by the end of the month it is light until about 20:15, which is what makes April good for sightseeing — you can do a museum in the afternoon heat and still walk the Acropolis area or Filopappou Hill in the evening. The Attica coast at Piraeus and Cape Sounion is windier and a degree or two cooler than the city centre.

The sea is the one thing April does not deliver. At around 16–17 °C it is fine for a quick dip for hardy swimmers and cold for everyone else; if swimming is the point of the trip, aim for late May or September instead.

April sits in the medium band on both counts. The Acropolis and the Acropolis Museum are busy from about 10:00, but queues are nothing like July or August, and you can still get a near-empty Plaka lane at 08:00 or a table in Monastiraki without booking. Weekends and the two weeks around Orthodox Easter are the exception: that is when Greeks travel domestically and when ferries to the islands sell out.

Prices follow the same shape. Flights and hotels are cheaper than in May and much cheaper than June, but Easter week (and the Greek school break that often runs alongside it) pushes Athens hotel rates up sharply for a few days. If your dates are flexible, the first half of the month before Easter week is the cheapest comfortable window.

Book the Acropolis and any popular museum slot online a day or two ahead for Easter week; outside it, walk-up is usually fine. Ferry tickets to the islands should be booked as soon as your dates are fixed if you are travelling over Easter.

The month's anchor is Orthodox Easter, which in 2026 falls on 12 April (2 May in 2027). Holy Week is marked across Greece with evening church services and a midnight service on Saturday; the details of what happens in central Athens — candlelit processions on Good Friday and Easter Sunday family meals — should be checked against City of Athens and Church of Greece listings closer to the time.

Around it sit the ordinary spring markers: Independence Day parades on 25 March just before the month begins, and Clean Monday kite-flying in early March. Specific 2026 dates for concerts, exhibitions and any extended archaeological-site hours should be checked against City of Athens and Greek National Tourism Organisation listings closer to the time.

April is the month to do the outdoor Athens that is unbearable in July. The Acropolis and the Ancient Agora are comfortable at almost any hour; the Panathenaic Stadium, Hadrian's Arch and the Temple of Olympian Zeus are short, flat walks between coffee stops. Filopappou Hill and Lycabettus give the classic views without the summer haze, and the National Garden is at its greenest.

Use the mild weather for a half-day out of the city: Cape Sounion for the Temple of Poseidon, or a ferry to Aegina from Piraeus — check current ferry timetables and site opening hours before you go. Further afield, the Peloponnese (Nafplio, Mycenae, Epidaurus) is at its best now — green hills, wildflowers and no summer heat. If you are heading onward to the islands, April is when seasonal ferries and hotels start reopening, but schedules are still reduced compared with June.

Pack for two seasons in one day. Mornings and evenings need a light jacket or sweater; midday wants a T-shirt. Add a compact umbrella or rain shell for the occasional shower, and comfortable broken-in shoes — Athens' archaeological sites are uneven stone and marble, and slippery when wet.

Sun protection matters more than people expect in April: UV is moderate to high by midday and the sites have little shade. Bring sunglasses, a hat and sunscreen. If you plan a swim, add a quick-dry towel, but treat the sea as a cold plunge rather than a swim. A modest layer for churches is useful during Holy Week, and a small day bag for ferries if you are island-hopping.

March is cooler and wetter but lower-priced and quieter, with Independence Day parades on 25 March. May is warmer, greener and fully open, with the sea becoming swimmable late in the month — the best all-round month for sightseeing and hiking. June brings long days, warm sea and full ferry timetables, but also the first heatwaves and higher prices.

If your priority is warm sea and open islands, shift to late May or September. If your priority is cheap flights and empty museums, March or early April is the better trade.
