  • Pangrati (Παγκράτι): Few tourists, good neighbourhood eating; 20–25 min walk to Plaka. Suits: Residential, local tavernas, near the Panathenaic Stadium.
  • Piraeus (Πειραιάς): The port for island ferries, about 30 min by metro from the centre; not a sight in itself for most itineraries. Suits: Ferry departures only.

  • Varvakios Central Market

    The city's working meat and fish market, with a handful of no-frills taverna counters inside that serve the market workers — and anyone else — fresh grilled fish or meat from early morning into the afternoon. Go for lunch on a weekday, not a Sunday (closed).
