Best tours in Athens: walking, food and day tours

Athens rewards a guide in two places: the Acropolis, where a licensed guide turns a crowded rock into a sequence of buildings you can actually read, and the central market and Psyrri backstreets, where a food walk gets you past the menu and into what locals order.

Everything else is optional. The ancient Agora, Kerameikos and the National Archaeological Museum all work well self-guided with a good audio guide or a printed plan. Day trips matter only if you have a third or fourth day: Delphi for the mountain sanctuary, Cape Sounion for the temple over the sea at sunset, and the Saronic islands if you want a boat without a long crossing.

Guided tours in Athens are sold in bands, not fixed prices. A 2–3 hour walking tour with a licensed guide sits around €25–45 per person in a group, and a private guide runs from roughly €120–200 for a half day (2026 estimate, check). Food tours cost more because the tastings are included: expect €55–90 per person for 3–4 hours, usually starting in the late afternoon or early evening (check).

Day trips are priced by distance and transport. Cape Sounion is the cheapest because it is a short drive; Delphi is a full day with a long coach leg. Island day trips are mostly the ferry fare plus whatever you spend on the island, since you can do Aegina or Hydra without a guide.

Timing matters more than price. Acropolis entry runs on timed slots in the busy season, and the site is hottest between 11:00 and 15:00 in summer. First entry and the last two hours before closing are cooler and quieter. Many archaeological sites close early on some public holidays; check the official culture ministry listing before you fix a date (check).

Most walking tours meet in the centre: Syntagma, Monastiraki or the Acropolis metro station. The metro gets you to all three, and the airport line runs to Syntagma and Monastiraki in about 40 minutes (check). Day trips usually pick up from a small set of central hotels or from a meeting point near Syntagma or Omonia.
