3 days in Athens: itinerary

Three days in Athens works as one heavy sightseeing day, one slow ancient-city day, and one day out of town. Put the Acropolis first thing in the morning, when the gate opens and the heat and queues are lowest. Keep the afternoon for the Acropolis Museum, which is air-conditioned and sits 300 m from the south slope entrance.

Day two stays on foot: Ancient Agora, Roman Agora, Hadrian's Library and the Plaka lanes, with a long lunch. Day three leaves the city — Cape Sounion for the temple at sunset, or a ferry to Aegina or Hydra if you want sea and a harbour town.

The three days sit inside a walkable core. Acropolis and Acropolis Museum are at the south edge of the centre, roughly 1.5 km from Syntagma Square. Ancient Agora is 400 m north of the Acropolis entrance; Plaka and Monastiraki fill the space between them. Piraeus, the ferry port, is 10 km southwest and reachable by metro line 1 in about 20 minutes.

Cape Sounion is about 70 km southeast of Athens by road, roughly 1h30 by car or bus. Aegina and Hydra leave from Piraeus port, not from the city centre, so build in the metro ride before your ferry.

Buy the combined multi-site ticket if you plan to see more than the Acropolis; it covers the Ancient Agora, Roman Agora, Hadrian's Library, Kerameikos, Olympieion and Lykeion, and runs for five days. It does not include the Acropolis Museum, which is a separate ticket and separate building.

Start early. In July and August the rock is exposed and hot by mid-morning, and heatwaves push past 40 °C. Carry water, a hat and sun cream. In winter, sites close earlier and some have reduced hours, so check the day before.

Stay central if this is a short trip: Plaka, Monastiraki, Syntagma or Koukaki put the main sites within a 20-minute walk. Piraeus suits an early ferry but adds a metro ride to everything else.

Book Acropolis timed entry in summer and ferry seats for Aegina or Hydra in advance, especially around Orthodox Easter (12 April 2026) and the 15 August peak, when Greeks travel and boats sell out.

Athens International Airport is 27 km east of the centre. Metro line 3 runs to Syntagma in about 40 minutes; the X95 express bus takes about 60 minutes to Syntagma and runs around the clock. A taxi is 30–50 minutes depending on traffic. From the US, UK, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, most arrivals land in the morning or early afternoon, which leaves the first afternoon free for Plaka and a first look at the Acropolis from below.

Flights from the US east coast run roughly 9–11 hours non-stop to Athens in summer; from London about 3h45; from Sydney or Auckland you connect through the Gulf or Asia, typically 20+ hours door to door. Jet lag from North America usually clears in a day, so keep day one light and save the Acropolis for the first full morning.

Within the city, metro lines 1, 2 and 3 plus the tram cover the centre and the coast. Buy a 24-hour ticket or a 5-day ticket at machines; validate before each ride. Central sites are close enough to walk between.
