Armenia itineraries: 1 week, 2 weeks and 3 weeks

Match the length to how much driving you want. Yerevan is the hub; every route below returns there at least once because the road network radiates from the capital.

Days 1–4 in Yerevan. Give the city two full days: the Cascade and Cafesjian Center, the Matenadaran, the History Museum and Tsitsernakaberd. Use the other days for day trips — Khor Virap with Ararat behind it, then Echmiadzin; Garni temple and Geghard monastery in one run, with the 30-minute walk down to the Symphony of Stones gorge if you have the legs.

Day 5: drive or take a marshrutka to Lake Sevan, stop at Sevanavank, then continue to Dilijan. Days 5–6 in Dilijan: Haghartsin and Goshavank monasteries, forest walks, and a slow afternoon in the old town. Day 7 back to Yerevan for the flight, or one more night if your departure is early.

This shape works without a car if you book two or three day tours from Yerevan and use the Yerevan–Dilijan marshrutka. With a car you gain the freedom to stop at Sevanavank and the roadside lavash bakeries on the way.

Repeat the 7-day ring, then add the south. From Yerevan, drive to Areni via Khor Virap if you skipped it: Noravank monastery sits in a red gorge above the village, and the Areni wine cellars are the reason to sleep here rather than push on.

Next day, continue to Goris on the M2 — roughly 4–5 hours from Yerevan in total, longer with stops. Goris is the base for Tatev monastery and the Wings of Tatev cable car, and for the cave village of Khndzoresk. Two nights in Goris is enough for Tatev plus one cave-and-canyon day.

The caveat: the M2 and much of Syunik run close to the Azerbaijan border. Read your own government's travel advice before you book anything here, and check it again the week you travel. If the advice is against it, swap the south for Gyumri and Lori, which are straightforward.

Two weeks lets you add the north-west and finish in Tbilisi. Yerevan 3 nights, then Gyumri for 2: the black-tuff streets, the crafts workshops and the food market are the draw, and it is a short hop from the capital.

From Gyumri, move to Lori for one night at Alaverdi or nearby, to see Haghpat and Sanahin, the two UNESCO monasteries. Then Dilijan for 2 nights, back through Yerevan, and south to Goris for 2 nights for Tatev. Finish with 2 nights in Yerevan before the night train to Tbilisi.

The night train is the elegant ending but runs on a limited schedule — confirm it is operating for your dates before you build the route around it. If it is not, a marshrutka or a shared transfer to Tbilisi takes most of a day.

Three weeks is where Armenia stops being a checklist. Keep the 14-day route and add Jermuk, the spa town in the south-east with mineral water and a canyon walk, and Stepanavan in the north for the Lori forests and the Dendropark.

Use the extra days for things the shorter routes skip: a second Yerevan stay long enough to actually sit in cafés, a wine day around Areni and Yeghegnadzor, and a slow loop through the Ararat Valley villages. If you are hiking, the Dilijan and Lori forests can absorb three or four days on their own.

At this length, consider basing rather than moving: 4 nights in Dilijan and 3 in Goris beat six one-night stops.

Transport sets the shape of every Armenian itinerary. Yerevan–Dilijan and Yerevan–Gyumri have regular marshrutkas; the southern routes are easier with a car or a hired driver. Trains are limited outside the Tbilisi service. See getting around armenia for the current options.
