How to get to Armenia: airports, flights and border crossings

Zvartnots International Airport (EVN) is the only airport most visitors will use. It sits about 12 km west of central Yerevan, so a taxi or the airport bus puts you at your hotel within half an hour of landing. The terminal is small and arrivals are quick by European standards.

There are no nonstop flights from the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia or New Zealand. Almost everyone connects once or twice, most commonly through Istanbul, Dubai, Doha, Moscow, Vienna, Paris, Warsaw or Athens. Flight times from those hubs run roughly 2–4 hours. From the US east coast, plan on 14–20 hours door to door with one stop; from London, 6–9 hours; from Australia or New Zealand, 20–30 hours with two stops. Treat all of these as bands, not schedules, and check live timetables before booking.

Gyumri's Shirak Airport (LWN) has very few scheduled services and is not a reliable arrival point — check before you build a trip around it. Some travellers fly into Tbilisi, Georgia, and continue overland by marshrutka or train, which can be cheaper and adds a day in Georgia.

The Georgia border is the practical land route. Three crossings are used by travellers: Sadakhlo–Bavra (on the road from Tbilisi to Vanadzor and Yerevan), Bagratashen (on the Tbilisi–Dilijan–Yerevan road) and Guguti (further west). Marshrutkas and shared taxis run from Tbilisi to Yerevan in roughly 5–7 hours; there is also an overnight train between Tbilisi and Yerevan on some days — check the current timetable, as it has changed often.

From Iran, the Nordooz–Agarak crossing links Tabriz with southern Armenia. It is open to travellers but services are sparse and the route is long; check your government's travel advice before using it, and again before travelling anywhere near the Azerbaijan border areas.

The Türkiye and Azerbaijan borders are closed. Do not book a route that assumes you can cross either.

Armenia is landlocked, so there is no sea route. The nearest useful ports are Batumi and Poti in Georgia on the Black Sea; from either you continue overland to Armenia, usually via Tbilisi. This only makes sense if you are already travelling in the Black Sea region.

Zvartnots is close enough that the transfer is not a decision point. A taxi takes 20–30 minutes to central Yerevan and costs roughly 3,000–5,000 AMD (about US$8–13, 2026 estimate) — agree the price or use a metered app before you get in. The airport bus (route 201) is far cheaper and runs to the city centre, but is slower and less frequent at night. Check the current timetable and fare on arrival.

If you land late, pre-book a transfer or confirm your hotel offers one. ATMs and currency exchange are available in the arrivals hall; you will want some dram for the taxi.

Many nationalities — including US, UK, EU, Canadian, Australian and New Zealand passport holders — can enter Armenia visa-free for up to 180 days, and e-visas are available for others. Rules change, so confirm against an official Armenian government source or your own foreign ministry before you fly. Your passport should be valid for at least six months beyond arrival.

You will also want travel insurance that covers medical care and, if you plan to hike or drive mountain roads, evacuation. Check the policy for the activities you actually intend to do.

Book flights early for summer (June–September) and around major holidays, when seats into Yerevan fill up and prices rise. Winter flights are cheaper but some mountain roads and rural services slow down.

If you are arriving overland from Georgia, keep some Georgian lari for the journey and change to dram once you are through. Buy an eSIM or local SIM on arrival if you want data for maps and ride-hailing; coverage in Yerevan is good, and patchier in the mountains.
