Use an eSIM with roaming (it routes through your home network) or install and test a VPN before you fly; VPN sites and app stores are hard to reach inside China, and only government-approved VPNs are officially permitted.

Anyang is the northernmost city in Henan and one of China's eight ancient capitals: the late Shang capital at Yinxu, where oracle-bone script was found, sits inside the city. The sights are split between the urban core (Yinxu, the writing museum, Tianning Temple) and a wide ring of rural sites (Cao Cao's mausoleum, Youli, Yuefei's temple, the Red Flag Canal), so a car or a long bus ride decides your day. Two nights covers the core; three lets you add the canal.

Getting around

City buses cost ¥1 and taxis start at ¥6. Shared electric bikes are everywhere: scan the QR code to unlock, ride, and the app charges on arrival — the fastest way between the dense central sights. For Cao Cao's tomb, Youli, Yuefei Temple or the Red Flag Canal, plan a taxi or a long bus transfer; the rural sites are 20–60 km out.

Watch out

Safety

Anyang is a low-crime city and walking the centre at night is normal. The real risks are traffic — electric bikes and scooters ignore lanes — plus summer heat, and long rural bus returns that stop running in the late afternoon.
  • Yinxu and the Royal Tombs are separate sites; the Yinxu ticket includes the shuttle to the tombs — keep the ticket.
  • Rural sites close earlier than you expect (Cao Cao's tomb 08:30–18:00, Red Flag Canal 08:00–18:00); last buses back run in the late afternoon.
  • July and August bring 160 mm of rain and 32 °C days; build in an indoor fallback.
  • Many smaller sights and buses take cash or WeChat/Alipay only — set up a payment app before you arrive.
  • English is limited outside the museums; have your hotel name and address written in Chinese.
