How much does a trip to Angola cost? Daily budget and prices

Budget US$65–130 a day, mid-range US$185–350, comfort US$460–810 per person, flights excluded. Luanda hotel rates drive the total, so most travellers should base in Luanda 2–3 nights and spend the rest of the trip in Lubango or on the Namibe coast, where beds and meals cost less.

Daily budget by travel style

Angola is not a cheap destination, and the reason is lodging rather than food. A simple guesthouse, local meals and shared transport can run under US$130 a day, but once you move into a business-class hotel in Luanda the same day costs two to three times more. The table below is per person per day, sharing a room at mid-range and comfort, with international flights excluded.

Provincial towns are cheaper than the capital for beds and meals. If your budget is tight, keep Luanda short and put the nights into Lubango or the Namibe coast.

What individual things cost

These are the line items that decide whether a day lands at the bottom or the top of a tier. Restaurant meals and beer are moderate; transport with a driver and park excursions are where costs climb. A single ride-hail across central Luanda is cheap, but a full day of hired car and driver is not, which is why shared vehicles matter at mid-range.

Money: cash, cards and the kwanza

The currency is the Angolan kwanza (AOA). Bring US dollars or euros as backup: some larger hotels accept foreign cards, but many ATMs do not accept foreign cards, so do not plan on withdrawing your way through the trip. Change money only at banks or licensed exchange offices, since street exchange is illegal.

Declare foreign cash of US$5,000 or more on arrival. On departure you may take out at most US$5,000 in foreign currency and 50,000 kwanzas; confirm the current limit with Banco Nacional de Angola before you fly, as rules can change.

  • Carry enough cash for several days; ATM access is unreliable.
  • Keep small notes for taxis, markets and tips.
  • Ask your hotel to change money or point you to a licensed office.

How to keep costs down

The single biggest saving is to shorten your Luanda stay. Two or three nights covers the city's main sights, and every night beyond that is charged at the most expensive room rates in the country. Move south to Lubango for the Serra da Leba and Tundavala viewpoints, or to the Namibe coast, where lodging and food cost less.

Second, share transport. A car with driver costs the same whether one person or four are in it, so a small group splits the day rate. Third, eat where Angolans eat: local restaurants serving muamba de galinha or grilled fish cost a fraction of an Ilha seafood dinner, and beer is inexpensive everywhere.

Domestic flights are a real cost — Luanda to Lubango is roughly US$180 one way — so decide early whether you are flying or driving, and build that into the budget rather than treating it as an extra.

How much for a typical trip

A one-week trip at mid-range, with two or three nights in Luanda and the rest in the south, lands around US$1,300–2,450 per person on the ground once you add a domestic flight or two. A comfort-level version of the same week runs roughly US$3,200–5,700. Budget travellers who keep moving and share rooms can hold a week near US$450–900 before flights.

Use the trip cost estimator to adjust these numbers for your own dates, party size and travel style.
