Best time to visit Angola: weather and seasons by month

Angola's seasons split by geography, not by a single national calendar. The coast and the interior plateau behave differently, so pick the month that matches where you are actually going.

Start with the region, not the country. If your trip is Luanda plus the Namibe coast, you have a wide window: the desert south is workable almost all year, and Luanda's worst rain is March–April. If your trip is Lubango, Tundavala and the Serra da Leba escarpment, aim for May–September, when the dirt and mountain roads are at their most predictable.

Then check the calendar against holidays. Carnival in February or March closes roads on the Luanda Marginal and fills hotels. 4 April, 17 September and 11 November are public holidays with low practical impact for visitors, but long weekends tighten domestic flights. December is the one month where Luanda prices genuinely jump.

Finally, decide what you want to see. Kalandula Falls are at their strongest April–June, which means accepting shoulder-season rain elsewhere. If you want the falls and dry roads in one trip, late May or early June is the compromise. If you want the coolest walking weather in the highlands, July and August deliver it, with cold nights near freezing at altitude.

Book flights and internal connections early for July, August and December. Luanda hotel rates are high year-round by regional standards, and the domestic network is thin, so a sold-out date can cost you a day.

Angola's road and domestic flight network is the real constraint, not the weather alone. Rain that would be a minor inconvenience elsewhere can close a dirt road in Malanje or the Lunda provinces for days between October and April. Build slack into any interior itinerary in those months.

The cacimbo is often described as grey, and it is: Luanda can sit under low cloud for days in July and August without rain. Travellers expecting sunshine on the coast in those months are sometimes disappointed, while those heading south to Lubango and Namibe get clear skies. Pack for both.

Altitude matters. Lubango sits around 1,700 m, so winter nights in June and July can drop close to freezing even though daytime temperatures are mild. A warm layer is not optional for highland travel in those months.

Health and entry paperwork are separate from timing but affect it: a yellow fever vaccination certificate is checked on arrival, and most Western passports enter visa-free for 30 days. Confirm current rules before booking, since they can change.
