Use this table to pick the trip shape before booking flights. Months follow the dry season, when the escarpment roads and the Namibe coast are at their best. Costs are 2026 estimates for one person per day, excluding international flights.

Summary: passport, month and cost
Passport / month / costWhat it means for your route
US, UK, Canada, Australia, NZ, Ireland (30 days visa-free)Book Luanda first, then a domestic flight south; carry the yellow fever card
May–OctoberBest window for Luanda, Lubango, Benguela and Kissama; book Lubango flights early
April–JulyAdd Kalandula Falls; the Lucala River runs strongest in this window
November–AprilHot, wet and humid in the north; the Namibe coast stays workable
Budget, 2026 estimateGuesthouse or hostel, local food, shared transfers: roughly USD 80–120 per day
Mid-range, 2026 estimateHotel, driver for day trips, some domestic flights: roughly USD 200–350 per day
Luanda specificallyHotel and restaurant prices run well above the rest of the country

Step by step: how to choose your places

Start with Luanda because every international flight lands there and the domestic network radiates from it. Two or three nights covers the Fortaleza de São Miguel, the Marginal promenade, the Ilha de Luanda seafront and the National Slavery Museum at Morro da Cruz. Traffic is heavy, so group sights by district and use a hotel car after dark.

Then decide between the south and the interior. The south is the easier add-on: fly Luanda to Lubango, base there for three nights, and day-trip to Serra da Leba, the Tundavala Fissure and the Cristo Rei statue. Tundavala is often misty early, so go mid-morning. From Lubango you can drive down the Leba pass to Moçâmedes (Namibe) for the desert coast and the Arco lagoon, then fly out.

The interior costs more time. Kalandula Falls and the Pungo Andongo black rocks sit near Malanje and need a driver plus an overnight; treat them as a two-night addition, not a day trip. Mbanza Kongo, the UNESCO-listed old Kongo capital, is a separate northern flight and suits travellers with a specific interest rather than a first visit.

If you have ten days or more, add Benguela and Lobito: colonial streets, the Restinga sandspit and beaches, reached by flying Luanda to Catumbela. Kissama National Park is the cheapest wildlife option because it is a road trip from Luanda, doable as a long day or one night. Iona National Park in the far southwest is expedition territory: 4x4, fuel and water planning, and several nights.

  • 7 days: Luanda 3 nights, Lubango 4 nights, day trips to Leba, Tundavala and the coast
  • 10 days: add Kalandula Falls and Moçâmedes, flying between Luanda and Lubango
  • 14 days: the western loop — Luanda, Kalandula and Pungo Andongo, Benguela and Lobito, Lubango, Moçâmedes
  • Skip on a first trip: Iona and Mbanza Kongo unless you have the time and a specific reason

Notes before you commit

Domestic flights are the backbone of any multi-region trip; schedules are thin, so book the Luanda–Lubango and Luanda–Catumbela legs before you lock hotels. Long drives outside the cities are best done in daylight with a local driver, and fuel stops need planning on the southern routes.

Luanda is expensive by regional standards, so budget accordingly and check current prices. Carry your yellow fever card for the whole trip, not just arrival. Travel insurance that covers medical evacuation is worth arranging before you go, because serious care outside Luanda is limited.

  • Book domestic flights early; they set your whole itinerary
  • Drive only in daylight, with a local driver, outside Luanda
  • Keep the yellow fever card with your passport
  • Arrange medical-evacuation cover before departure
