The honest verdict
The capital sits at about 1,000 m in a narrow valley with Escaldes-Engordany running straight into it. The centre is short and flat enough to walk end to end in 30 minutes. There is no airport and no railway, so the trip is decided by the road: a coach or transfer of about three hours each way, border checks at the customs posts, and snow on the passes in winter. Four small clusters cover a first visit; hiking and skiing are trips up the valley from one kept bed.
