Doha Hamad International Airport (DOH): visitor guide

Hamad International sits about 15 km east of central Doha, on the coast beyond the old airport. It replaced Doha's older airport as the main gateway and is the hub for Qatar Airways, so a large share of passengers are in transit rather than entering the country.

The terminal is one long building with a central concourse and two wings. Arrivals, passport control and baggage reclaim are on the lower level; departures and check-in are above. If you are connecting, follow the transfer signs rather than exiting — the transit area has its own security check and a very large duty-free hall.

For arrivals, the practical sequence is: passport control, baggage belt, customs, then out to the arrivals hall where the metro station, taxi rank and car-hire desks are signposted. Allow 45–60 minutes from landing to standing outside with a bag.

The Doha Metro Red Line is the default for most arrivals. The station connects to the terminal, and the ride to Msheireb in the centre takes about 20 minutes. A single trip is QAR 2 on a Standard card, capped at QAR 6 a day; Gold Club is about QAR 10. Buy the card at the machine — many trips have no paper ticket. Food and drink are banned on board.

Karwa taxis are turquoise, metered and reliable. The airport flagfall is about QAR 25, and a ride across Doha runs QAR 25–60. Evening rush, roughly 17:00–19:00, can double the time. Uber and the Karwa app work too, typically QAR 15–50 in town, with fixed fares and a pickup pin — useful for hotels away from the metro.

Metrolink feeder buses are free with a metro card and reach hotels and malls 1–3 km from stations, but they are infrequent, so check routes in the Qatar Rail app. Rental cars start around QAR 120–250 a day; radar cameras are everywhere and fines are heavy.

The metro does not run all night. Service is roughly 06:00–24:00, to 01:00 on Thursdays, and on Fridays it opens at 14:00 and runs to 01:00. If you land after midnight, plan on a taxi or a pre-booked car with driver.

Taxis wait at the arrivals rank through the night, and app pickups work if you have data. Have the hotel address in Arabic or as a pin, and carry small notes: drivers may not have change for a large bill late at night.

If you are only transiting, staying airside is simpler than clearing immigration for a few hours. If you hold a long layover and want to see Doha, check your passport's eligibility for visa-free entry before you plan anything outside the terminal.

The airport has several lounges, including Qatar Airways' own facilities for eligible passengers and at least one paid access lounge open to any traveller. Access rules, opening hours and walk-in prices change often, so confirm on the day rather than relying on a guide.

Paid access is usually booked online in advance and is cheaper than paying at the door; some cards and lounge-membership programmes include entry. If you are flying in economy with a long layover, a paid lounge with a shower is often better value than a transit hotel room.

For sleep, the terminal has quiet seating areas and a transit hotel inside the secure area. Book the hotel ahead in peak season; walk-up availability is not guaranteed.

Car-hire desks sit in the arrivals area, with the major international brands plus local operators. Rates run about QAR 120–250 a day depending on size and season. Book ahead for a specific model; walk-up stock is thinner in winter, the busy season.

Driving in Qatar is on the right, roads are wide and signed in Arabic and English, and fuel is cheap. The catch is enforcement: radar cameras are everywhere and fines are heavy, so watch the posted limit. Rental cover normally excludes off-road driving, and driving on sand is not allowed in an ordinary car.

You do not need a car for Doha itself — the metro and taxis cover the city. A rental pays off for the north and west coast: Zubarah, Al Khor and Wakrah are straightforward highway drives. For the Inland Sea, book a licensed 4x4 tour instead of driving the dunes yourself.
