Addis Ababa is a big, high-altitude capital with heavy traffic: give it two full days for the National Museum, Merkato and a coffee-house afternoon, sleep near Meskel Square or Bole, and keep every cross-town hop to one per half-day.

The honest verdict

Addis sits at about 2,350 m and sprawls along ring roads that clog at rush hour. The trips that go wrong are the rushed ones: altitude on the first afternoon, a cross-town taxi at 17:00, cash carried into Merkato, and a flight day started too late. Four clusters cover the centre, and a base near Meskel Square or Bole keeps the airport within 30–60 minutes. Ride-hailing apps and hotel cars are your last-service plan.

Three mistakes to avoid

Self-appointed 'guides' who attach themselves at the museum or Merkato and demand payment after showing you around: agree nothing, or decline politely and firmly.(Scams)

Etiquette: the top three

Churches and mosques: Shoulders and knees covered; women should carry a headscarf for Orthodox churches. Shoes off before entering a mosque prayer hall and some church interiors.
Right hand: Give and receive money, food and objects with the right hand or both hands, not the left alone.
Greetings: A handshake with a slight bow or a shoulder bump (for closer acquaintances) is common; do not pull away from either.
