Zurich nightlife: best areas, bars and safety tips

Zurich's night is small enough to walk between three zones. The Niederdorf and the lanes of the Old Town hold the densest cluster of bars, from beer halls to small cocktail rooms, and they are busiest from about 20:00. Langstrasse, a few minutes west of the station, is where the late crowd goes: clubs, dive bars and a mix of languages. Zurich West, around Hardbrücke, has larger venues in former industrial buildings.

Prices are the main filter. A 0.5 l beer in a bar is roughly CHF 8–14 and a cocktail CHF 15–20 (2026 estimate); a club entry with a drink is often CHF 20–30 (2026 estimate). If that is not your budget, plan a single drink with a view and spend the evening on the lake promenade instead.

Zurich keeps earlier hours than Berlin or Barcelona. Many bars close between 00:00 and 02:00, and clubs run later, often until 04:00 or beyond at weekends; individual venues vary, so check before you commit to a late night. Sunday and Monday are quiet, with some places shut entirely.

Cash is accepted but card is normal. Tipping is not expected: service is included, and rounding up is enough. Expect to pay at the bar in most places rather than at a table.

Everything in the centre is walkable: Hauptbahnhof to Niederdorf is about 10 minutes on foot, and Niederdorf to Langstrasse about 20. Trams and S-Bahn trains cover the rest, and Zurich West is two stops from the main station by S-Bahn.

After midnight the network thins out. Night trams and buses run on Friday and Saturday nights; on other nights check the last connection before you go out, or budget for a taxi. A taxi across the centre is roughly CHF 25–40 (2026 estimate).

Zurich is a safe city by any standard, and the night-time risk is mostly petty: bag-snatching in crowds, pickpockets on late trams, and people who have had too much to drink. Keep your bag zipped and in front of you, and stay with your group on Langstrasse after 02:00.

Dress is relaxed; there is no strict door policy at most places, though larger clubs may ask for ID. Bring ID: the legal drinking age is 16 for beer and wine and 18 for spirits, and venues do check.

If you are here in summer, the lake promenade and the outdoor bars along the water are the best-value evening: buy a drink, sit by the water, and watch the city slow down. In winter, the Old Town bars with small rooms fill up early, so arrive before 21:00 if you want a seat.

Thursday to Saturday is the real weekend for nightlife, with the fullest bars and the most club nights. Friday and Saturday also bring the night trams, which makes a late finish easier. Sunday and Monday are the quietest, and some venues close.

Summer (June to August) shifts the crowd outdoors: lake bars, promenade drinks and long evenings. Winter (December to February) is indoor and earlier, with Christmas markets adding a seasonal option in the Old Town. Spring and autumn are the middle ground: fewer people, same prices.
