Ystad is a small south-coast town of about 18,000 people with a medieval core of half-timbered houses, a working harbour and a rail link to Malmö and Copenhagen. It works as a one-night stop or a quiet base for the coast east to Simrishamn and Ales Stenar. Most of the centre is walkable in 20 minutes.

Getting around

Walk: the old town, harbour and station are within about 20 minutes of each other. Local buses run to Kåseberga (Ales Stenar) and along the coast; Skånetrafiken tickets cover buses and trains in Scania. Bikes can be rented in town and the Sydkustleden coastal route passes through.

Safety

Ystad is a low-crime small town; the real risks are winter ice on pavements, bicycles in the centre and strong currents at the beach. Emergency number is 112.
  • Ferry and train timetables change by season: check Skånetrafiken and the ferry operators before booking.
  • Rapeseed fields flower in early May; do not walk into crops, farmers fence them off.
  • Many restaurants and museums keep shorter hours outside summer: check before you go.
  • Cash is rarely needed; cards work almost everywhere.
