Ypres (Ieper in Dutch) is a small Flemish town rebuilt after 1918, and the base for the First World War memorials of the Ypres Salient. The town centre is walkable in an afternoon; the cemeteries and battlefields sit in open farmland 3–10 km out, so plan transport for those. Most visitors come for one night, two at most.

Get around
The centre is on foot. For Tyne Cot, Hill 60, Langemark and Vladslo you need a car, a bike or an organised battlefield tour; buses exist but are slow and sparse. Trains run to Kortrijk, Ghent and Brussels via Kortrijk.
