Yowah

Go only if you want to fossick for opal or see a town of 141 people: 1–2 nights, own car, fuel and food before you arrive.

Yowah is a tiny opal-mining settlement in south-west Queensland, reached by 60 km of sealed road from the Adventure Way near Eulo, or a 23 km unsealed 4WD track that takes about the same time. There is one caravan park with six cabins, no pub and no bottle shop. You come for the Yowah nut opal, the fossicking fields and the flat-country view from The Bluff — not for services.

  • Oceania ↗Oceania's island states guard their farms and reefs at the border: tick 'yes' on the arrival card for any food, plant, animal product, soil or used outdoor gear, and let the officer decide.
  • Oceania ↗Across the tropical South Pacific, cyclones are possible from November to April: choose insurance that covers weather delays and keep one spare night before a long-haul departure.
  • Australia and New Zealand ↗Both countries drive on the left, with long distances between fuel stops in the outback and on New Zealand's back roads; fatigue causes more visitor crashes than speed.
  • Australia ↗Almost every visitor needs a visa or an electronic authorisation (ETA or eVisitor, depending on passport) before boarding: apply only through the official Department of Home Affairs site or the official AustralianETA app, and check the rules for your passport.
  • Australia ↗Declare all food, plant material, seeds, wood and animal products on your arrival declaration; undeclared items can bring on-the-spot fines or visa cancellation. When unsure, declare it.
  • Australia ↗Drive on the left. An overseas licence in English (or with an official translation or International Driving Permit) is accepted for visitors; check the state rules and your rental contract.
  • Australia ↗Swim between the red and yellow flags on patrolled beaches; rip currents cause most beach drownings.

Getting around

You need your own car. There is no public transport, no taxi and no rideshare in Yowah. The sealed road from the Adventure Way near Eulo is about 60 km; a 23 km unsealed 4WD track cuts across and takes roughly the same time, with a possible saving if you are heading to or from Thargomindah. Fuel up in Eulo or Thargomindah before you commit.

Watch out

Safety

Remote and very small: the risks are heat, distance and isolation, not crime. Tell someone your route, carry water, and do not rely on a phone signal outside Telstra coverage.
  • No pub and no bottle shop in Yowah: the nearest beer is in Eulo or about 135 km (84 mi) north at Toompine.
  • Only Telstra has mobile coverage here, and it is 3G-era; other networks get nothing. There is a public phone.
  • The 23 km (14 mi) unsealed route is 4WD only and can be impassable after rain: check road conditions before you take it.
  • Summer heat is the real hazard: carry more water than you think you need and do not walk the fields in the middle of the day.
  • Fuel, food and mechanical help are limited: arrive with a full tank and your own supplies.
