North, Wuhan: neighborhood guide

North Wuhan is not one neighborhood. It is the two districts of Huangpi and Xinzhou, a mix of farmland, low hills, reservoirs and fast-growing new towns that stretch from the edge of Hankou out toward the Dabie foothills. Distances are large: Huangpi alone runs roughly 60 km north to south, and the Mulan cluster of parks sits in its northern half.

The draw is landscape and theme parks, not city life. The Mulan sites borrow the legend of Hua Mulan — grassland, a lake, a heaven lake, a cool valley — and each is a separate paid attraction with its own gate, bus stop and ticket. Between them are villages such as Dayuwan, with stone houses from the Ming and Qing periods.

Practical consequence: you do not wander here. You pick one or two sites, check the bus that serves them, and give each a half day or more. The southern edge, where Metro Lines 1, 2 and 21 run, feels like an extension of Hankou; the north feels like a rural county.

Stay if you land late or leave early at Tianhe airport, if you want two full days in the Mulan parks without a 90-minute commute each way, or if you are travelling by car and want cheap space. Some resorts, including Jinligou, have their own lodging.

Do not stay if this is your first Wuhan trip. The Yellow Crane Tower, the Bund-style Hankou waterfront, Wuchang's museums and the main food streets are all south of here, and you would spend hours commuting. Base in Hankou or Wuchang and treat North Wuhan as a day trip.

A middle option: one night near the airport before an early flight, with the rest of the trip in the city.

Food here is district-level Chinese cooking: noodle and rice shops around the bus terminals and metro stops, farmhouse restaurants (nongjiacai) near the park gates serving stewed chicken, river fish, tofu and seasonal greens, and hotel dining inside the resorts. Prices at the park restaurants are higher than in town; a simple meal is commonly ¥30–60 per person (2026 estimate, check).

Wuhan's signature dishes — hot dry noodles (reganmian) and doupi — are a city breakfast, and you will find them around Huangpi town and the larger metro stations rather than deep in the countryside. Vegetarian and halal options are limited outside the towns; ask, or carry something.

Around the airport, expect chain cafés and hotel restaurants rather than local streets. If you are staying near the terminal, eat before you arrive or budget for hotel prices.

By air: Wuhan Tianhe International Airport (WUH) is in Huangpi District, and Metro Line 2 terminates at the airport, which makes it the simplest link between North Wuhan and central Hankou.

By metro: Lines 1, 2 and 21 all have stations in southern Huangpi, and Line 21 extends into the southwestern corner of Xinzhou. Only a small number of attractions are walkable from a station; the rest need a bus or car.

By bus: the standard route to the Mulan parks is bus 292 from Hankou Railway Station to Huangpi Bus Terminal (123 Mulan Street), then a local tourist bus — for example p806 to Dayuwan, p802 to Jinligou, p801 to Mulan Grassland or Mulan Lake, p70 to Mulan Heaven Lake. Buses to Xinzhou leave from Xinrong Bus Station in Hankou, and Zhucheng Bus Terminal on Wenchang Avenue serves Xinzhou town.

By taxi or ride-hailing: the practical option for park-to-park hops, but drivers may be scarce at closing time; agree a return or keep a local number. Distances between parks are 10–30 km on hill roads.
