Western Ukraine is a quarter of the country with a Central European past: Greek Catholic Galicia, Austro-Hungarian architecture in Chernivtsi, Hutsul mountain villages in the Carpathians. Lviv is the arrival hub and the one base that works for a short trip. Everything else is a long bus or train ride away, so pick one second base rather than trying to loop the whole region.
