  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Washington is the seat of Washington County in the South Pittsburgh Region, about 45–60 minutes by car from Pittsburgh International Airport. It is a small city of roughly 14,000 people with an unusual amount of highway for its size — I-70 and I-79 cross just outside town, and US-19 and US-40 meet downtown. Its draw is the Pennsylvania Trolley Museum, a Frontier League ballpark and a walkable Main Street core, not a multi-day sight list. One night is enough; two if you want a ballgame and the museum on separate days.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

A car is the practical choice: sights sit 2–5 km apart and the trolley museum is outside the centre. Freedom Transit runs three local routes plus an express to Pittsburgh, with a local fare around $2 and about $4 to Pittsburgh (check current fares and schedules). Downtown itself is walkable in 10–15 minutes end to end.

Working trolley rides and a family-friendly collection; seasonal hours, check before going.

I-70 west by car

Victorian downtown and riverfront; worth a half-day if you are already driving west.

Door to door: 4–5 h by car

Too far for a day return; treat it as a separate stop.

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Downtown / Main Street

Walk to restaurants, the Bradford House and the George Washington Hotel; best if you are here without a car.

West Chestnut Street / Crown Center

Chain hotels and the shopping centre near I-70; needs a car for everything.

Meadow Lands / I-79 exits

Highway motels and casino-area lodging north of town; cheapest beds, no walkable core.

Watch out

Safety

A quiet small city; the real risks are winter driving on I-70/I-79 and US-40, and unlit stretches between downtown and the highway hotels. Downtown is fine on foot in the evening.
  • Distances between the museum, the ballpark and downtown are too long to walk comfortably: plan on a car or a rideshare.
  • Winter ice and snow on US-40 and the I-70/I-79 interchange; allow extra time in Jan–Feb.
  • Small-city evening hours: many downtown kitchens close early on weeknights — check before you go out.
  • Ballgames and museum hours are seasonal; confirm dates on the official sites before booking a night around them.
