Top picks
Warsaw is a rebuilt capital, so the tourist core is compact: the Old Town, the Royal Route, the museums and the main rail station all sit within a few kilometres on the west bank of the Vistula. That makes the district choice mostly about what you want within a 10-minute walk at night.
Śródmieście (Centrum) is the default for a first visit. You can walk to the Old Town, the Royal Castle and the Uprising Museum, and the M1 metro puts the rest of the city within a few stops. It is also the priciest and noisiest option.
Praga-Północ, on the east bank, has the best value and the strongest bar and club scene, with a short tram ride into the centre. Mokotów, south of the centre, is greener and quieter, good for families and longer stays. If you are only here for one night between flights or trains, stay near the station or the airport rather than trekking into the Old Town.
| Area | Best for | Typical double room (2026 estimate) | Walk to Old Town |
|---|---|---|---|
| Śródmieście — Centrum | First trip, sightseeing on foot | 400–650 PLN | 10–20 min |
| Śródmieście — Old Town edge | Atmosphere, short stays | 450–700 PLN | 2–8 min |
| Praga-Północ | Budget, nightlife, longer stays | 280–450 PLN | 25–35 min or tram |
| Mokotów | Families, quiet, parks | 300–500 PLN | 30–40 min or metro |
| Okęcie (airport area) | Layovers, early flights | 250–450 PLN | 30–40 min |
Ranges are 2026 estimates for a standard double in high season; check current rates before booking.
Prices and hours
Warsaw is cheaper than Western European capitals but not cheap by regional standards, and prices swing hard with the season. Summer and the December market weeks are the peak; January to March and November are the quietest and cheapest.
Beyond the room rate, budget for transport and food. A single public-transport ticket is about 4.40 PLN (2026 estimate), and a 24-hour or 72-hour pass usually pays off if you move around a lot. A casual lunch of pierogi or a milk-bar meal runs roughly 25–45 PLN, a mid-range dinner 60–120 PLN per person, and a museum ticket 20–35 PLN, with many museums free on one weekday.
Most hotels and hostels have 24-hour or late reception, but small guesthouses in Praga and Mokotów may close their desk overnight, so tell them your arrival time. Shops close on Sundays except for a few trading Sundays each year, so buy essentials on Saturday.
| Item | Price (2026 estimate) | Notes |

| Single transport ticket | 4.40 PLN | Validate on board |
| 24-hour transport pass | about 15 PLN | Check current zones |

Getting there
Warsaw Chopin Airport (WAW) is about 10 km south-west of the centre. The S2 suburban rail line and buses 175 and 188 run to the centre, and a taxi or ride-hailing car takes roughly 20–30 minutes depending on traffic. Allow more time in the morning and evening peaks.
If you arrive by train, Warszawa Centralna sits under the Centrum district, so a hotel in Śródmieście means you can walk from the platform. Long-distance trains from Kraków take around 2.5 hours, and from Gdańsk around 3 hours; book seats in advance on busy dates.
From the airport area to the Old Town is 30–40 minutes by public transport. If your flight lands late or leaves early, staying near the airport or Centralna is the practical choice rather than crossing the city.
- Chopin Airport (WAW) to Centrum: S2 train or bus 175/188, roughly 30 minutes
- Taxi or ride-hailing from the airport: 20–30 minutes, allow more at peak
- Warszawa Centralna: in Śródmieście, walkable to most central hotels
- Kraków to Warsaw by train: about 2.5 hours
- Gdańsk to Warsaw by train: about 3 hours
FAQ
Questions people ask
Which area is best to stay in Warsaw?
For a first visit, Śródmieście (Centrum or the Old Town edge) is the best base: walkable to the Old Town, POLIN and the Uprising Museum, and on the M1 metro. Choose Praga for cheaper rooms and nightlife, or Mokotów for quiet and parks.
Which area is best for first-time visitors in Warsaw?
Śródmieście. The Old Town, Royal Route, main museums and Warszawa Centralna station are all within walking distance, and the metro reaches everything else. Expect 400–650 PLN for a double in high season, 2026 estimate.
Which area is best for families in Warsaw?
Mokotów, especially around Pole Mokotowskie park, is quieter and greener with more space, and the metro reaches the centre quickly. Śródmieście also works if you want to walk to sights, but it is noisier and pricier.
Is Praga safe for tourists?
Praga-Północ is a normal city district with a strong bar and club scene, but some side streets are quieter at night. Stay on lit main streets, use trams or ride-hailing after dark, and treat it as you would any big-city nightlife area.
Where should I stay for a one-night layover in Warsaw?
Near Warszawa Chopin Airport or Warszawa Centralna. Both cut transfer time and let you reach the terminal or platform early. The Old Town is 30–40 minutes from the airport, which is tight for a short stop.
