Volusia County runs about 80 km of Atlantic coast between Jacksonville and Cape Canaveral, with the St. Johns River on its west side. Daytona Beach is the motorsport and boardwalk base; New Smyrna Beach is the quieter beach and surf base; DeLand is the inland base for springs and the St. Johns. A car makes the county work: the coast towns are 15–40 minutes apart, and the inland sights are 30–60 minutes from the beach.
