Volgograd is the former Stalingrad, a 60 km ribbon of city on the west bank of the Volga. Almost everything a visitor comes for sits on one north-south axis: Mamayev Kurgan, the Panorama museum, Pavlov's House, the Volgograd Arena. Two nights covers the war sites and the riverfront without rushing; a third only pays off if you add the Volga-Don canal or a river cruise. Summer is hot and dusty, winter is cold and grey, and the mild windows are short.

Getting around

The city runs 60 km north-south, so plan by district, not by walk. The Volgograd Metrotram is the fast spine; buses 12, 35 and 95 link the centre with Mamayev Kurgan and run often — under 10 min at peak. Do not trust mapping apps for marshrutka schedules here — they list routes that do not run.

Watch out

Safety

Normal big-city precautions apply; the practical risks are heat and dust in summer, long cross-town distances and unreliable transport apps. Check your own government's travel advice for Russia before booking anything.
  • The city is over 60 km long: a 'short' cross-town trip can eat an hour.
  • Dust and dirt after rain, especially between snowmelt and the first leaves in April; dust storms are possible with wind.
  • Summer heat from late May; comfortable walking weather ends around late August.
  • Mapping apps give unreliable public-transport directions and marshrutka times for Volgograd.
  • Pavlov's House is a lived-in building, not a museum: only the brick memorial outside is open to visitors.
  • Museum labels and exhibitions are largely in Russian only.
