Vojvodina is the flat, Habsburg-built north of Serbia: Novi Sad, Subotica, Sombor, Zrenjanin and Pančevo sit 40–110 minutes apart on the Pannonian plain. The fast train links Belgrade and Novi Sad in about 36 minutes, so most travellers sleep in Novi Sad and day-trip the rest. A car opens the salaši (farmsteads), Fruška Gora monasteries and the Danube and Tisa river towns; without one, stick to the rail and bus spine.
