One day in Vilnius: the best itinerary

Vilnius Old Town is compact enough to cross on foot in about 25 minutes, so a single day works if you keep to one district and do not chase every church. The route below runs downhill-to-uphill: start at the cathedral, climb into the university quarter, then finish on a hill for the view.

If you only have half a day, cut the KGB Museum and the Užupis loop and stay between Cathedral Square and the university. If you have a full day and good weather, the full route fits comfortably with two sit-down breaks.

The whole route sits inside about 2 km. Cathedral Square is the natural anchor: buses and coaches stop nearby, and the tourist information point is on the square. From there, Pilies gatvė runs north-east to the university, and Gediminas' Tower sits on the hill behind the cathedral.

Užupis is a 10-minute walk east across the river from the university. The KGB Museum is on the other side, near Gediminas Avenue, so do it before or after the tower rather than doubling back. Three Crosses hill is a short climb from Užupis, which makes it the natural end of the day.

Most of the Old Town is free to walk. You pay for towers, museum entry and the odd courtyard. Churches generally open in the morning and close in the evening, and several close for services; treat any specific hour as check rather than fixed.

Museums in Vilnius commonly close one day a week, often Monday. The KGB Museum is the one stop where a timed slot or a queue is likely in summer, so check the day before and go early if you can.

Vilnius Airport is about 6 km from the centre; bus and train links run to the city, and a taxi is the quick option if you land late. From the bus and train stations, the Old Town is a 10–15 minute walk or one short tram ride.

Inside the centre, walk. Trams and buses are useful for the station, the airport and the business district, but almost nothing on this one-day route needs them. Buy a single ticket or a day ticket from the driver or an app; validate it if the system requires it.

Wear shoes with grip. The Old Town is cobbled and the climbs to Gediminas' Tower and Three Crosses are uneven, and they get slippery after rain or snow. In winter, daylight is short: plan the hill viewpoints for early afternoon rather than sunset.

Eat lunch away from the main square for better value; the streets just off Pilies gatvė have the same food for less. Carry some cash for small churches and market stalls, though cards are widely accepted. If you are here in early March, the Kaziukas fair fills the Old Town and slows every walk — allow extra time or move the route to the morning.
